Plaza del Carmen Mall is a two-story enclosed shopping mall in Caguas, Puerto Rico. It is currently anchored by an Outlet China; a discount store, a Grand Way; a department store, and an Advance Auto Parts. It is also home to a Farmacias Caridad; a pharmacy. It was formerly also anchored by a Fallas Discount Stores which closed in 2020, the space remaining vacant. History Early development Plans for the construction of Plaza del Carmen began in 1960, but the development was halted until 1973 by the Planning Board and the Department of Commerce who considered that a center of its size in the Caguas area was not warranted by then. In 1973, under the development of Turabo Shopping Center, Inc., plans for the construction of the commercial complex of $12 million were approved, with plans of a two level, approximately 232,000 square feet of retail space designed by architect Carlos Sanz to lease to commercial businesses. Turabo or Villa Turabo is a barrio in the municipality of Caguas, Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 15,739. Pitusa () was a chain of department stores operating in Puerto Rico. It was one of the largest Puerto Rican store companies and a competitor of another chain on the island, Topeka. History Origins In 1976, Israel Kopel would open the first Pitusa store, completely changing the existing traditional marketing concept on the Island. Felito Félix (born June 13, 1939) is a Puerto Rican singer, actor and song composer whose musical career has lasted for 69 years. He has recorded 67 albums. In addition, he is the composer of the municipal hymn of his hometown, Cidra, Puerto Rico. Biography Felito Félix is a native of Cidra, Puerto Rico. In 1976, Félix debuted as an actor, along with Spanish teen musical group La Pandilla in a movie named "La Pandilla en Apuros", an Alfred D. Julio Manuel Acevedo Lanuza, (December 23, 1945 – July 6, 2015) better known as Julio Ángel, was a Puerto Rican trio, bolero, rock and pop singer. Biography Months after Julio Angel's birth, the Acevedo family emigrated to New York, New York, returning to Puerto Rico in 1955. Julio Angel showed interest in singing in his pre-teens and, a few years later, formed a band which he and his friends named "Julito and the Latin Lads". During the 1960s, Julio Angel made his television debut at Puerto Rico's WAPA-TV canal 4 television channel, singing with his group, participating in Myrta Silva's show, "Una Hora Contigo" ("One Hour With You"), which lead him to become one of the nueva olas teen idols in Puerto Rico. Arturo Somohano
Arturo Somohano Portela (September 1, 1910 – March 23, 1977) was a musical composer and director of the San Juan Symphony Orchestra, which is now named after him. Early years Somohano, born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, had always been musically inclined and as a young child had learned to play the piano. He loved classical music and when he learned musical composition and harmony at the Fransician Chapel, he felt inspired to write music in a classical style. San Juan Symphony Orchestra Upon the outbreak of World War II, Somohano entertained U.S. Army troops by playing the piano and directing concerts at various military bases. His composition, "Canciones de las Americas" (Songs of the Americas), became an iconic anthem in the Army. Luz Esther Benítez Rosado (born July 22, 1942), also known as Lucecita, is a Puerto Rican singer, part of the country's new wave popular music. Born in Bayamon, a large city in Puerto Rico, she participated in amateur radio shows. Benítez's most important career step came in 1969, when she won the ''Festival de la Cancion Latina'' (''Festival of the Latin Song'') in Mexico. She participated with two songs, "Génesis" by G.V. Lloveras and "Energía de mis manos", by M. de Jesús. "Genesis" received the highest points (223) in the festival and Lucecita also won as best dressed performer.
