Pieter Smitbrug
The Pieter Smitbrug is a series of bridges in Groningen, Netherlands, which completed in February 2021. It connects the village of Blauwestad with Winschoten, the largest city in the region. It is a cycle and footbridge, wide and long. Its estimated cost is 6 million euro. The bridge deck is made of 350 cubic meters of FSC-certified Lophira alata wood from Gabon, Africa, supplied by Wijma Kampen B.V. The bridge has an 80-year design life. It is designed to be bat-friendly in paint and solar LED lighting. The 2004 was created to revive the Oldambt area of East Groningen, which had been declining in population and economically poor since the 1980s. The Oldambtmeer was created by re-flooding fallowed land in 2005, and the future town of Blauwestad was also named in 2005. Pieter Smit
Pieter Smit (11 October 1963 – 10 April 2018) was a Dutch police officer and politician, belonging to the Democrats 66 (D66) party. Smit was born in Delfzijl. He held a commanding position in the former Haaglanden police forceConcerning The Hague and surrounding municipalities. before entering full-time into politics. He was elected into the municipal council of Zoetermeer in 1994 and became an alderman in 2006. From 1 September 2010 until his death in April 2018, he was mayor of Oldambt. He was the first non-acting mayor after the establishment of this new Groningen municipality on 1 January 2010. He also performed several ancillary functions, like commissioner of Groningen Airport Eelde. Pieter Smit died suddenly of a cardiac arrest in his hometown Scheemda, aged 54. Oldambt () is a municipality with a population of in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. It was established in 2010 by merging the municipalities of Reiderland, Scheemda, and Winschoten. Winschoterdiep
The Winschoterdiep () is a canal in the province Groningen of the Netherlands. It leads to the Rensel, which is actually part of this canal. Construction was started in 1618 and finished in 1634. The Winschoterdiep's total length is 35.5 kilometres, and it is approximately 100 metres in width. Sixteen bridges and locks are built across this canal, as well as many other passages. Ships must be less than 16 m in breadth to pass through some of these. It is one of the oldest canals ever built in Groningen still in use. In the section between Hoogezand and Waterhuizen, there are several shipwharfs. Hoogezand was founded near the canal in 1618. A7 Motorway (Netherlands)
The A7 motorway is a motorway in the Netherlands connecting Zaandam, via the Afsluitdijk, Sneek and Groningen to the German border near Bad Nieuweschans. The entire road is part of the European route E22, with exception of the first kilometer, between the terminus in Zaandam and the interchange Zaandam. The total length is 236 km. Fallow is a farming technique in which arable land is left without sowing for one or more vegetative cycles. Groningen (; gos, Grunn or ) is the capital city and main municipality of Groningen province in the Netherlands.
