Holme Pierrepont
Holme Pierrepont is a hamlet and civil parish located south-east of the city of Nottingham in Nottinghamshire, England. It is in the Gamston ward of the Rushcliffe local authority in the East Midlands region. The population of the civil parish (which envelops Adbolton, Bassingfield and a fringe portion of Lady Bay) as at the 2011 census was 528, and this reported 568 residents at the 2021 census. The word ''Holme'' comes from the Old English and Old Norse words for a small island or low-lying land by a river. ''Pierrepont'' is northern French for "Stone Bridge" and is the surname of an Anglo-Norman family that once held the manor. Charles William Sydney Pierrepont, 4th Earl Manvers, VD (2 August 1854 – 17 July 1926), known as Viscount Newark from 1860 to 1900, was a British nobleman and Conservative Party politician. Career Born in London, he was the eldest son of Sydney William Herbert Pierrepont, 3rd Earl Manvers. He was educated at Eton, and was styled by the courtesy title of Viscount Newark from 1860 until succeeded to his father's peerage in January 1900. Sydney William Herbert Pierrepont, 3rd Earl Manvers (12 March 1826 – 16 January 1900) was a British hereditary peer and politician. Early life and education Born at Holme Pierrepont in 1826, Pierrepont was the second but only surviving son of Charles Pierrepont, 2nd Earl Manvers and his wife Mary Letitia Eyre. He was educated at Eton, entered Christ Church, Oxford in 1843 and received his BA in 1846. Pierrepont was styled Viscount Newark after the death of his elder brother in 1850. Military service While at Oxford, Pierrepont was commissioned a first lieutenant in the Nottinghamshire Yeomanry Cavalry (Sherwood Rangers) in 1844. In 1851, he was commissioned a captain in the South Nottinghamshire Yeomanry Cavalry. Charles Herbert Pierrepont, 2nd Earl Manvers (11 August 1778 – 27 October 1860) was an English hereditary peer and naval officer. Early life and education Charles Pierrepont was the second son of Charles Pierrepont, 1st Earl Manvers and his wife Anne Orton Mills. His elder brother, who predeceased their father, was Evelyn Pierrepont who was a Member of Parliament. Charles succeeded to the earldom upon the death of their father in 1816. Naval career Pierrepont entered the Royal Navy as a midshipman, and was made lieutenant on 10 March 1797, and on 11 August the same year commander of , a brig mounting 18 six-pounder guns, with a complement of 120 men. Charles (Medows) Pierrepont, 1st Earl Manvers (4 November 1737 – 17 June 1816) was a British naval officer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1778 to 1796 when he was raised to the peerage as Viscount Newark. Early life Born Charles Medows, sometimes Meadows, he was the second son of Philip Meadows (1708-1781), deputy ranger of Richmond Park, by his marriage to Lady Frances Pierrepont (1711-1795), daughter of William, Earl of Kingston. Evelyn Pierrepont, 1st Duke of Kingston-upon-Hull, ( 16655 March 1726) was an English aristocrat. He was born at West Dean, Wiltshire, the third son of Robert Pierrepont of Thoresby, Nottinghamshire (son of William Pierrepont ), and his wife Elizabeth Evelyn (daughter of John Evelyn ). William Pierrepont, 4th Earl of Kingston-upon-Hull (c. 1662 – 17 September 1690) was a British peer and Member of Parliament. The second son of Robert Pierrepont of Thoresby Nottinghamshire and his wife Elizabeth Evelyn, Pierrepont was born on the Evelyn estate of West Dean, Wiltshire. He was educated at Trinity College, Oxford. He inherited the Earldom of Kingston-upon-Hull in June 1682 from his elder brother Robert Pierrepont, 3rd Earl of Kingston-upon-Hull. In 1689 and 1690 he acted as Colonel of a Regiment of Foot, Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire and Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire, Chief Justice in Eyre North of the Trent, and High Steward of Kingston-upon-Hull. He died in 1690 of apoplexy at Holme Pierrepont, and was succeeded as 5th Earl by his younger brother Evelyn Pierrepont. Francis Pierrepont (died 1659) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1640. He fought in the Parliamentary army in the English Civil War. Pierrepont was the third son of Robert Pierrepont, 1st Earl of Kingston-upon-Hull and his wife Gertrude Talbot, daughter of Henry Talbot. In April 1640, Pierrepont was elected Member of Parliament for East Retford in the Short Parliament. In the Civil War, Pierrepont raised a regiment of Nottinghamshire Trained Bands in Nottingham for the parliamentary army of which he became Colonel.Lowe, p. 5. In 1645 he was elected MP for Nottingham in the Long Parliament. He built Pierrepont House in Nottingham in the mid-17th century. Pierrepont died in 1659. Henry Pierrepont, 1st Marquess of Dorchester, PC, FRSFRCP (March 16068 December 1680) was an English peer. He was the son of Robert Pierrepont, 1st Earl of Kingston-upon-Hull, and his wife, the former Gertrude Talbot, daughter of George Talbot and Elizabeth Reyner, and cousin of the Earl of Shrewsbury.
