Pick The Stars
''Pick the Stars'' is a Canadian entertainment competition television series which aired on CBC Television from 1954 to 1957. Premise Singers, dancers, musicians and other performers competed for cash prizes in this early Canadian talent show, replacing the 1952–54 series '' Now's Your Chance''. Canada Packers was the series sponsor. The competition for the first two seasons was structured as six sets of six episodes each. In each set, there were five episodes of general competitions. The winners of each of these episodes competed in a sixth semi-final episode. Following these 36 episodes were two episodes in which the semi-final winners competed, an finally a 39th episode in which two grand prize winners were determined. For the first two seasons, contestants were judged by a panel at the studio. Semi-finalists were determined by mail sent by viewers. CBC Television
CBC Television (also known as CBC TV) is a Canadian English-language broadcast television network owned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the national public broadcaster. The network began operations on September 6, 1952. Its French-language counterpart is Ici Radio-Canada Télé. With main studios at the Canadian Broadcasting Centre in Toronto, CBC Television is available throughout Canada on over-the-air television stations in urban centres, and as a must-carry station on cable and satellite television providers. Royal Canadian Air Farce
The Royal Canadian Air Farce was a comedy troupe that was active from 1973 to 2019. It is best known for their various Canadian Broadcasting Corporation series, first on CBC Radio and later on CBC Television. Although their weekly radio series ended in 1997 and their television series ended in 2008, the troupe produced annual New Year's Eve specials on CBC Television until 2019. CBC announced that, due to budgetary constraints, the special scheduled to air on December 30, 2019 would be the final in the series. Miss Canada
Miss Canada is a beauty pageant for young women in Canada. It was founded in Hamilton in 1946. No title was awarded from 1993 through 2008. The trademark was purchased in 2009 by a Québec organization who produces the pageant under the name to this day. According to the new Miss Canada and Miss Teen Canada web site, the title was re-established with a focus on personality over physical appearance. The Miss Canada competition is Canada's oldest extant beauty pageant. Winnifred Blair of Saint John, New Brunswick was proclaimed the first "Miss Canada" on 11 February 1923 at an earlier, unrelated competition during the Montreal Winter Carnival. The runner-up in that event was Muriel Harper of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Dorval () is an on-island suburban city on the island of Montreal in southwestern Quebec, Canada. In 2016, the Canadian Census indicated that the population increased by 4.2% to 18,980. Although the city has the largest surface area in Montréal’s west side, it is among the least densely populated. Robert John Pratt
Robert John Pratt (28 February 1907 – 6 April 2003) was an architect, comedian, and politician in Canada. Pratt was born in London, England; his Irish mother lived in London and his father lived in Montreal. In 1933, he received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from McGill University and became a practicing architect. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Hussars during World War II rising to the rank of major. In 1942, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy so he could be a part of the Royal Canadian Navy musical revue ''Meet the Navy'' and sung the song "You'll Get Used to It" (which he rewrote some of the lyrics). Pratt also performed for the 1946 film version Meet the Navy (film). After the war, Pratt made a series of humorous short how-to films. In 1948, he performed in a musical version of ''The Drunkard'' which he took on tour. The Travellers (band)
The Travellers were a Canadian folk singing group that formed in mid-1953. They are best known for their rendition of a Canadian version of " This Land Is Your Land" with lyrics that reference Canadian geography. The group was formed as a result of singalongs at Camp Naivelt, a Jewish socialist vacation community that is operated by the United Jewish Peoples' Order in the village of Norval located west of Brampton, Ontario. Pete Seeger was a regular visitor to the camp and encouraged the group. Founding members of the group were Jerry Gray (banjo and lead singer), Sid Dolgay (mando-cello), and singers Helen Gray, Jerry Goodis, and Oscar Ross. In 1961 Goodis was replaced by Ray Woodley. In 1965 they were joined by singer Joe Hampson, husband of Sharon Hampson of Sharon, Lois & Bram fame. Richard Caruthers Little (born November 26, 1938) is a Canadian-American impressionist and voice actor. Sometimes known as the "Man of a Thousand Voices", Little has recorded nine comedy albums and made numerous television appearances, including three HBO specials. Early life Little was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, the middle of three sons. His father, Lawrence Peniston Little, was a surgeon who served as a lieutenant commander in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve during World War II and then worked for the Department of Veterans’ Affairs until his death in 1959.
