Piazza Piave
Piazza Piave is a square on the viali di Circonvallazione in Florence, Italy. It marks the eastern boundary of the historic city centre on the north bank of the river Arno. At its centre is the Torre della Zecca Vecchia. It marks the junction between five traffic arteries - the Lungarno della Zecca Vecchia, the Lungarno Pecori Giraldi, the viale della Giovine Italia, via dei Malcontenti and via Tripoli. Inside the city wall, at the junction between via Tripoli and via dei Malcontenti, the square widens - this space is recorded on the carta del Buonsignori (1565) as the "Sepolture dei Giudei" or Jewish Cemetery. The Viali di Circonvallazione are a series of 6-lane boulevards surrounding the north part of the historic centre of Florence. The Buonsignori Map (Italian - ''Pianta del Buonsignori'' or ''Carta del Buonsignori'') was an axonometric map of the city of Florence, produced as an etching in 1584 and later reissued in 1594. It was drawn by and named after the Olivetan monk Stefano Buonsignori, etched by Bonaventura Billocardi and edited by Girolamo Franceschi. One of the 1594 copies belongs to the Museo di Firenze com'era and hangs in the local history rooms at the Palazzo Vecchio. Its full Latin name is ''Nova pulcherrimae civitatis Florentiae topographia accuratissime delineata'' (New map of the fairest city of Florence, the topography most accurately delineated). Buonsignori was official cartographer and cosmographer to Francesco I and Ferdinand I. Battle Of Piave River (1809)
The Battle of Piave River was fought on 8 May 1809 between the Franco-Italian army under the command of Eugène de Beauharnais and an Austrian army led by Archduke John of Austria. The Austrian commander made a stand behind the Piave River but he suffered a defeat at the hands of his numerically superior foes. The combat took place near Nervesa della Battaglia, Italy during the War of the Fifth Coalition, part of the Napoleonic Wars. The initial Austrian invasion of Venetia succeeded in driving the Franco-Italian defenders back to Verona. At the beginning of May, news of Austrian defeats in Bavaria and inferiority in numbers caused Archduke John to begin retreating to the northeast. When he heard that his enemies were crossing the Piave, the Austrian commander turned back to give battle, intending to slow Eugène's pursuit of his army.
