Piano Concerto (Blitzstein)
Marc Blitzstein wrote his Piano Concerto for piano and orchestra in 1931 when he was 25 years old. The concerto was not performed in public during the composer's lifetime; the Brooklyn Philharmonic premiered the piece on January 1, 1986, 22 years after Blitzstein's death. Prior to the premiere, it had only been heard publicly twice, once in a two-piano version. Blitzstein had hoped to be the piano soloist at the concerto's premiere. The concerto, 24 to 30 minutes in length, is dedicated to musical patron Alene Erlanger. Marc Blitzstein
Marcus Samuel Blitzstein (March 2, 1905January 22, 1964), was an American composer, lyricist, and Libretto, librettist. He won national attention in 1937 when his pro-Trade union, union musical ''The Cradle Will Rock'', directed by Orson Welles, was shut down by the Works Progress Administration. He is known for ''The Cradle Will Rock'' and for his off-Broadway translation/adaptation of ''The Threepenny Opera'' by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. His works also include the opera ''Regina (Blitzstein), Regina'', an adaptation of Lillian Hellman's play ''The Little Foxes''; the Broadway theatre, Broadway musical theater, musical ''Juno (musical), Juno'', based on Seán O'Casey's play ''Juno and the Paycock''; and ''No for an Answer''. He completed translation/adaptations of Brecht's and Weill's musical play ''Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny'' and of Brecht's play ''Mother Courage and Her Children'' with music by Paul Dessau. There have been several organisations referred to as the Brooklyn Philharmonic. Piano Concertos
A piano concerto, a type of concerto, is a solo composition in the classical music genre which is composed for piano accompanied by an orchestra or other large ensemble. Piano concertos are typically virtuosic showpieces which require an advanced level of technique. Piano concertos are typically written out in music notation, including sheet music for the pianist (which is typically memorized for a more virtuosic performance), orchestral parts, and a full score for the conductor. The standard practice in the Baroque and Classical eras (together spanning from circa 1600 to circa 1800), was for the orchestra to provide subordinate accompaniment over which the piano plays solo parts. However, at the end of the classical era, the orchestra had an equal role to the pianist and frequently had “dialogue” or “conversation” between the two.
