Peter David Murphy (21 January 1923 – 3 June 2011) was an Irish radio and television broadcaster, best known as the host of the RTÉ's ''Cross Country Quiz''. Background and early life Murphy was born in Huntington, Clonegal, County Carlow and was the youngest of the three children (and only son) of John and Julia Murphy. John Murphy (1879–1961) was a farm manager at Huntington Castle, while Julia was a shop assistant in the nearby village of Clonegal. He was educated at the local national school and, later, Carnew Vocational School, before graduating to Warrenstown Agricultural College, County Meath. Throughout his twenties, Murphy helped form his local branch of Macra na Feirme and became secretary of the organisation's regional executive, during which time he won several medals for public speaking and debating. Peter Murphy (footballer, Born 1922)
Peter Murphy (7 March 1922 – 7 April 1975), often referred to as Spud Murphy, was an English footballer who played as an inside left. He played professionally for three clubs, Coventry City, Tottenham Hotspur and Birmingham City. He is possibly best remembered for the incident in the 1956 FA Cup final when Manchester City's goalkeeper Bert Trautmann broke a bone in his neck when diving at Murphy's feet. Life and career Murphy was born in West Hartlepool, County Durham, and moved to Coventry, Warwickshire, with his family when he was four years old. He was with both Coventry City and Birmingham as an amateur footballer before his career was interrupted by the Second World War. He turned professional with Coventry City in May 1946 at the age of 24, making over 100 appearances and scoring at a rate of a goal every three games. This is a list of New Zealand Police officers and non-sworn staff killed in the line of duty. As of 2025, 34 police officers have been killed by criminal act, and about 17 have died from accidental causes, during the execution of duty. There has been one instance of multiple police deaths, when Stanley Graham gunned down four officers (and two wartime home guardsmen) attempting to apprehend him in 1941, and four double fatalities. Most of the homicides have been a result of gunshot wounds, the accidents mainly due to either drowning or vehicle (car/aircraft) accidents. A slain officer may receive a police funeral, including an honour guard and flag-draped casket, and be officially mourned in the New Zealand House of Representatives. Peter James Murphy (born 13 February 1990) is an English former professional footballer who played primarily as a midfielder but was also a capable defender. Playing career Murphy joined Stanley as a 16-year-old. Towards the end of the 2007–08 season, he spent a few weeks on loan at Northern Premier League club Prescot Cables to gain experience, and signed his first professional contract with Stanley on his return from loan, in April 2008. He made his debut for Stanley on 26 April, in the Football League Two clash with Wrexham which ended as a 3–1 win. He signed a new contract in May 2010 and again in 2012. Peter Michael Murphy (born 27 October 1980) is an Irish football player and coach, who is the manager of Scottish League One club Queen of the South. Murphy played as a defender, but also operated through midfield. He currently holds the club record at Carlisle United for the most appearances for the club as an outfield player with over 400, before being released after 12 years of service in 2013. He later played for Scottish clubs Ayr United and Annan Athletic, and then became Annan's manager. After seven seasons in that position he was appointed manager of Queen of the South in May 2024. Peter John Joseph Murphy (born 11 July 1957) is an English musician, singer, and songwriter. He is the vocalist for the post-punk band Bauhaus (band), Bauhaus, which he co-founded with Daniel Ash in 1978. After Bauhaus disbanded, Murphy formed Dalis Car with Japan (band), Japan's bassist Mick Karn and released one album, ''The Waking Hour'' (1984). He went on to release a number of solo albums, including ''Should the World Fail to Fall Apart'' (1986) and ''Love Hysteria'' (1988). Peter Murphy (born July 15, 1949) is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party who previously represented district 28 in the Maryland House of Delegates. In 2014, he was elected President of the Charles County Board of Commissioners. Background Murphy was born in Washington, D.C., on July 15, 1949. He has both a B.A. and an M.A. from the American University, and an Ed.S. Degree in Counseling from George Washington University.
