Percy Hall Grimshaw
Percy Hall Grimshaw ISO FRSE FERS (1869 in Leeds – 1939 in Edinburgh) was an English entomologist and zoogeographer. He was an expert on butterflies (Lepidoptera). He is also known for his work on Diptera. Life He was born in Leeds the son of Emma and David Grimshaw. He originally was in banking in Leeds. In 1895 he accompanied William Eagle Clarke to Edinburgh to take on roles at the Royal Scottish Museum as an entomologist. From 1930 to 1935 he was Curator, Keeper of Natural History in the museum. He is known mainly for his work on Diptera. In 1909 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were Sir James Johnston Dobbie, John Horne, William Eagle Clarke and Ramsay Heatley Traquair. Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) is an award granted to individuals that the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland's national academy of science and Literature, letters, judged to be "eminently distinguished in their subject". This society received a royal charter in 1783, allowing for its expansion. Ramsay Heatley Traquair
Ramsay Heatley Traquair FRSE FRS (30 July 1840 – 22 November 1912) was a Scottish naturalist and palaeontologist who became a leading expert on fossil fish. Traquair trained as a medical doctor, but his thesis was on aspects of fish anatomy. He held posts as Professor of Natural History and Professor of Zoology in England and Ireland, before returning to his native Edinburgh to take up a post at the Museum of Science and Art. He spent the remainder of his career at the Museum building up a renowned collection of fossil fish over a period of more than three decades. He published extensively on palaeoichthyology, authoring many papers and a series of monographs. His studies of rocks and fossils in Scotland overturned earlier work on fossil fish, establishing new taxonomic classifications. Clare Island Survey
The Clare Island Survey was a multidisciplinary (zoological, botanical, archaeological, and geological) survey of Clare Island, off the west coast of Ireland. The survey, which followed a similar survey of Lambay Island in 1905 and 1906, was proposed by Robert Lloyd Praeger and in April 1908 a committee was formed to recruit and organise the work of over one hundred scientists from Ireland, England, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland and the data collected during three years of field work on the island (1909-1911). The committee members were Robert Lloyd Praeger, Robert Francis Scharff, Richard Manliffe Barrington, Grenville Cole, Nathaniel Colgan and Henry William Lett. The bulk of the work is concerned with systematic zoology and botany but paid special attention to questions of geographical distribution, dispersal, and ecology and covered antiquities, place-names, family names, geology, climatology, agriculture and meteorology.
