PanAmSat
PanAmSat Corporation was a satellite service provider headquartered in Greenwich, Connecticut, United States. Founded in 1984 by Reynold "Rene" Anselmo, it operated a fleet of communications satellites used by the entertainment industry, news agencies, internet service providers, government agencies, and telecommunication companies. Anselmo got the idea for PanAmSat from Norm Leventhal, a communications lawyer in Washington, D.C., to whom he had turned to for advice regarding difficulties he was encountering in getting reasonably priced satellite transmission for his Spanish International Network (SIN), the current-day Univision. Hughes Electronics Corporation was formed in 1985, when Hughes Aircraft was sold by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to General Motors for $5.2 billion. Surviving parts of Hughes Electronics are today known as DirecTV Group, while the automotive divisions became Aptiv. On June 5, 1985, General Motors was announced as the winner of a secretive five month, sealed-bid auction. Other bidders included Ford Motor Company and Boeing. Rene Anselmo
Reynold Vincent "Rene" Anselmo (January 14, 1926September 20, 1995) was an American businessman who founded the satellite company PanAmSat and co-founded the television network Univision. Early life Anselmo was born in Bedford, Massachusetts. His father was of Italian descent and the postmaster in Quincy. At the age of 16, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and flew 37 missions as a tail gunner on a dive bomber in the Pacific Theatre of Operations during World War II. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1951. Career Anselmo travelled to Mexico, where he was hired by Televisa to produce television shows for Mexican television. He wed his wife Mary during his residence in Mexico. Mary Anselmo
Mary Anselmo (née Morton; September 21, 1929 – August 14, 2013) was an American billionaire businesswoman. She was the widow of Rene Anselmo, the founder of PanAmSat, the first privately held satellite communications company in the United States. Career Mary was born in Omro, Wisconsin. She met her husband Rene Anselmo in the 1950s while he was a guest director at Pasadena Playhouse. The couple married aroun 1955 in Mexico City, where Rene was working for Univision at the time. Mary's husband Rene Anselmo died in 1995, two days before the initial public offering of his company. For a time, Mary was principal owner of the company, although she had rarely been involved in her husband's business and said in a 1996 interview with ''The New York Times'' that she knew little about satellites.
