P. B. Van Trump
Philemon Beecher Van Trump (known as P. B. Van Trump; December 18, 1838 – December 27, 1916) was an American pioneering mountaineer and writer who lived in the state of Washington. He is best known for the first documented ascent of Mount Rainier in 1870. Early life Van Trump was born in Lancaster, Ohio, on December 18, 1838. His father, Philadelph Van Trump, and his maternal grandfather, Philemon Beecher, represented the Ohio districts in the United States House of Representatives. He was educated at Kenyon College and the New York University. Washington In 1867, he moved to Washington Territory as the private secretary to Marshall F. Moore, the seventh governor of the territory. Moore was Van Trump's brother-in-law. Van Trump first saw Mount Rainier in August 1867, and later recalled: He and Hazard Stevens made the first documented successful climb of Mount Rainier on August 17, 1870. John Muir
John Muir ( ; April 21, 1838December 24, 1914), also known as "John of the Mountains" and "Father of the National Parks", was an influential Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, botanist, zoologist, glaciologist, and early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States of America. His letters, essays, and books describing his adventures in nature, especially in the Sierra Nevada, have been read by millions. His activism helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley and Sequoia National Park, and his example has served as an inspiration for the preservation of many other wilderness areas. The Sierra Club, which he co-founded, is a prominent American conservation organization. In his later life, Muir devoted most of his time to the preservation of the Western forests. Christine Falls
Christine Falls is a waterfall on Van Trump Creek in Pierce County, Washington. The falls are feet high and are best known for the Christine Falls Bridge spanning the lower drop. The upper drop is high and is almost impossible to film in tandem with the oft-photographed lower tier. The lower tier is probably one of the most commonly photographed locations in the Mount Rainier area. The falls were named in honor of Christine Van Trump, the daughter of P. B. Van Trump. In 1889 Christine, then nine years old, accompanied her father on an ascent of Mount Rainier, as far as her strength would allow. She made it to the level, even though she had a crippling nervous disorder. Van Trump Glacier
The Van Trump Glacier is a scattering of glaciers and snowfields located on the southern flank of Mount Rainier in Washington. Named after P. B. Van Trump, who was part of an early ascent of Mount Rainier, the glacier covers and contains 500 million ft3 (14 million m3) of ice. The glacier is located between the Wilson Glacier to the east and the Kautz Glacier to the west. The elevation of the scattering ranges from at the lower end to on the upper reaches of the glacier. Meltwater from the glacier drains into the Nisqually River. Van Trump Creek, also called Van Trump Falls Creek or the Van Trump Fork of the Nisqually River, is a Stream, creek in Pierce County, Washington, Pierce County, Washington (U.S. state), Washington. It is a tributary of the Nisqually River, joining the river just above the mouth of the Paradise River. The creek is known for having several well known waterfalls along its course. Alpine Meadow
Alpine tundra is a type of natural region or biome that does not contain trees because it is at high elevation, with an associated harsh climate. As the latitude of a location approaches the poles, the threshold elevation for alpine tundra gets lower until it reaches sea level, and alpine tundra merges with polar tundra. The high elevation causes an adverse climate, which is too cold and windy to support tree growth. Alpine tundra transitions to sub-alpine forests below the tree line; stunted forests occurring at the forest-tundra ecotone are known as ''Krummholz''.
