Ozan Lumber Company
The Ozan Lumber Company was a major timber company based in Nevada County, Arkansas, Nevada and Clark County, Arkansas, eventually operating several mills and owning extensive timberlands. It was founded and owned by the Bemis family of Arkansas during the early 20th century, and was prominent during the 1930s and the Great Depression. The family company established a practice of replanting to create sustainable forests. Origins and expansion Texas businessmen J.H. Bemis and his cousin Benjamin Whitaker opened a sawmill, mill in Prescott, Arkansas, calling it the Ozan Lumber Company. Bemis had moved to Texas from New York (state), New York. One of his four sons, Horace Erastus Bemis (H.E.), who died in 1914, had purchased the Prescott and Northwestern Railroad. Nevada County is a county located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,997, less than half of its peak in 1920. The county seat is Prescott. Nevada County is Arkansas's 63rd county, formed during the Reconstruction era on March 20, 1871, from portions of Hempstead, Ouachita and Columbia counties. Antoine is a town in Pike County, Arkansas, United States, along the Antoine River. The population was 117 according to the 2010 census. Geography Antoine is located at (34.036183, -93.421787). It is located on hills immediately west of the Antoine River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.3 km (0.5 mi), all land. Elevation is above sea level. History The town of Antoine began as a stopping point on the old Southwest Trail to Texas in the early 19th century. Hope is a city in Hempstead County in southwestern Arkansas, United States. Missouri Pacific Railroad
The Missouri Pacific Railroad , commonly abbreviated as MoPac, was one of the first railroads in the United States west of the Mississippi River. MoPac was a Class I railroad growing from dozens of predecessors and mergers. In 1967, the railroad operated 9,041 miles of road and 13,318 miles of track, not including DK&S, NO&LC, T&P, and its subsidiaries C&EI and Missouri-Illinois.
