Oriskany, New York
Oriskany ( or ) is a village in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 1,400 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Iroquois word for "nettles". The Village of Oriskany is in the Town of Whitestown, southeast of the City of Rome. NY-69 passes through the village, which is south of the Erie Canal. History The Oneida village of Oriska was established at the confluence of the Oriskany Creek and the Mohawk River before 1766. Oriska, sometimes also spelled as Ockrisk, Oriska, or Oriske, is believed to be a linguistic corruption of "Ol Hiskè" meaning "a place of nettles." On August 5, 1777, during the American Revolution, Oriska was visited by the Tryon County militia led by Brigadier General Nicholas Herkimer. Oriskany Falls is a village in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 732 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from a waterfall on a nearby stream. The Village of Oriskany Falls is in the southeast section of the Town of Augusta and partly overlaps the Town of Marshall. The community is at the intersection of Routes 12B and 26, which share a brief concurrency within the village and south to Bouckville. History The community was first settled ''circa'' 1794. It was originally known as Cassety Hollow, and was incorporated as the Village of Oriskany Falls in the 1880s. In the mid and late 1900s, Mr. George Tucker owned a large portion of the town, which he donated to the people, including a church and the local store, "Tucker's Big M." The store, however, was sold in 2004 to the "Shur-Fine" corporation, who had a gas station put in and remodeled the storefront, and then again in 2006 to brothers-in-law Badal Singh and Sukhminder Singh, natives of India. ... USS ''Oriskany'' (CV/CVA-34), ( or ), was one of the few s completed after World War II for the United States Navy. The ship was named for the Battle of Oriskany during the Revolutionary War. The history of ''Oriskany'' differs considerably from that of her sister ships. Originally designed as a "long-hulled" ''Essex''-class ship (considered by some authorities to be a separate class, the ), she was not completed and construction was suspended in 1946 after the end of World War II. She eventually was converted to an updated design called SCB-27 ("27-Charlie") and commissioned in 1950. This updated version became the template for modernization of 14 other ''Essex''-class ships. ''Oriskany'' was the final ''Essex''-class ship completed. She operated primarily in the Pacific into the 1970s, earning two battle stars for service in the Korean War, and ten for service in the Vietnam War. Battle Of Oriskany
The Battle of Oriskany ( or ) was a significant engagement of the Saratoga campaign of the American Revolutionary War, and one of the bloodiest battles in the conflict between the Americans and Great Britain. On August 6, 1777, a party of Loyalist (American Revolution), Loyalists and several hundred Native Americans in the United States, Indian allies from different tribes ambushed an American military party that was marching to relieve the siege of Fort Stanwix. This was one of the few battles in which the majority of the participants were Americans; Patriot (American Revolution), Patriots and allied Oneida people, Oneidas fought against Loyalists and allied Iroquois in the absence of British regular soldiers. There was also a detachment of Hessian (soldier), Hessians in the British force, as well as Western Indians including members of the Mississaugas.
