Oridathoru Phayalvaan
''Oridathoru Phayalvaan'' () is a 1981 Indian Malayalam-language drama film written, edited and directed by P. Padmarajan. The film is a folk parable about the success and failure in the life of a gatta gusthi wrestler in Kerala. It stars Rashid, Nedumudi Venu and Jayanthi. The film won the award for best script at the Kuala Lumpur International Film Festival, and a gold medal at the Asian Film Festival. Plot Patronized by a village tailor, a gatta gusthi wrestler becomes a local hero when he defeats all his opponents and claims the prettiest woman as his wife. As a story within a story it also portrays how the tailor makes a profit from the illiterate wrestler. He marries a girl, only for it to be revealed later that he has another wife and isn't interested in her more than a trophy. Nedumudi Venu
Kesavan Venugopal (22 May 1948 – 11 October 2021), better known by his stage name Nedumudi Venu, was an Indian actor and screenwriter from Kerala, who predominantly worked in Malayalam cinema. He acted in more than 500 films, primarily in Malayalam and also in Tamil in a career spanning nearly five decades. He wrote screenplays and directed one film. Nedumudi Venu won three National Film Awards and six Kerala State Film Awards for his various performances. Early life Venu was born as Venugopal to P. K. Kesava Pillai, a school master and P. Kunjikkuttiyamma in Nedumudi as the youngest of their five children. He had four elder brothers. Krishnankutty Nair was an Indian actor who worked in Malayalam cinema. He was from Pippinmoodu, near Sasthamangalam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Nair worked with various theatre groups before becoming a film actor. Known for his natural acting and timing, Nair worked with world-renowned directors such as G. Aravindan, and Adoor Gopalakrishnan. He also acted in several movies by award-winning Malayalam filmmakers such as M. P. Sukumaran Nair, Lenin Rajendran, Padmarajan, Kamal, and Sathyan Anthikkad. Gatta Gusthi
Gatta gusthi is a form of submission wrestling practiced in Kerala, India. It is competed inside an open ring on the ground, usually on a beach, known as ''godha''. Wrestlers are called '' phayalvans''. The sport consists of around 100 techniques. Gatta gusthi was popular in the state until the arrival of freestyle wrestling and karate in late 1960s. Its freestyle form is known simply as gusthi. History Gatta gusthi developed into a major sporting event during the period of erstwhile Cochin and Travancore kingdoms of present-day Kerala. Gigging is the practice of hunting fish or small game with a gig or similar multi-pronged spear.
