Ontario Highway 532
Secondary Highway 532, commonly referred to as Highway 532, is a provincially maintained secondary highway in the Canadian province of Ontario. The route connects several mining and milling towns in Unorganized Algoma District, notably Searchmont. The route is remote, ending at a mine access road north of Highway 556, its southern terminus. A former designation of Highway 532 travelled through Muskoka along the Parry Sound Colonization Road and was redesignated as Highway 141 in 1974. At that time, the present route was established following what was until then a segment of Highway 556. It has remained unchanged since then. It is the only highway that passes through the community and connects with the entrance to the Searchmont Resort Ski Area. The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is the provincial ministry of the Government of Ontario that is responsible for transport infrastructure and related law in Ontario. The ministry traces its roots back over a century to the 1890s, when the province began training Provincial Road Building Instructors. In 1916, the Department of Public Highways of Ontario (DPHO) was formed and tasked with establishing a network of provincial highways. The first was designated in 1918, and by the summer of 1925, sixteen highways were numbered. In the mid-1920s, a new Department of Northern Development (DND) was created to manage infrastructure improvements in northern Ontario; it merged with the Department of Highways of Ontario (DHO) on April 1, 1937. Ontario Highway 516
Secondary Highway 516, commonly referred to as Highway 516, is a provincially maintained secondary highway in the Canadian province of Ontario. The highway is in length, connecting Highway 72 and Highway 642 near Sioux Lookout with Highway 599 north of Savant Lake. Highway 516 was first assumed by the Department of Highway (DHO), predecessor to the modern Ministry of Transportation of Ontario, in 1956. However, the original route was in Muskoka, between the village of Windermere and Highway 11 east of Utterson. This route was mostly transferred to the newly-formed District Municipality of Muskoka in 1972, although a portion near Utterson now forms part of Highway 141. Searchmont Resort
The town of Searchmont received its name in honor of Theodore C. Search, T. C. Search, the treasurer of the consolidated Lake Superior Company. Searchmont was once a bustling community built around the forestry industry. The local sawmill was the livelihood of most of the residents. When the mill closed in the early 1990s, much of the population moved away. The Searchmont Community Centre recently was renovated in 2002 with the aid of a SuperBuild grant provided by the Ontario government. Part of the newly renovated Searchmont Community Centre has been named after Walter Senko, a recently deceased school teacher in the area. A designated place in Statistics Canada census data, Searchmont had a population of 300 in the Canada 2006 Census.
