Ontario is a city in southwestern San Bernardino County in the U.S. state of California, east of downtown Los Angeles and west of downtown San Bernardino, the county seat. Located in the western part of the Inland Empire metropolitan area, it lies just east of Los Angeles County and is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. As of the 2020 Census, the city had a population of 175,265. The city is home to the Ontario International Airport, which is the 15th-busiest airport in the United States by cargo carried. Ontario International Airport is an international airport two miles east of downtown Ontario, in San Bernardino County, California, United States, about east of downtown Los Angeles and west of downtown San Bernardino. Area codes 909 and 840 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the far-eastern part of Los Angeles County and southwestern San Bernardino County in the U.S. state of California. Area code 909 was split from area code 714 on November 14, 1992. By August 1993, dialing of the area code became mandatory. Western Riverside County was split off from 909 into area code 951 on July 17, 2004. 909 still covers small portions of Corona, Riverside, Moreno Valley, and the entire city of Calimesa which are in Riverside County.
