Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights
The Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights were a professional ice hockey team in the American Hockey League. They played in Omaha, Nebraska, United States at the Omaha Civic Auditorium from 2005–07. Following the 2006–07 season, the Calgary Flames announced that the team would relocate to the Quad Cities for 2007–08. History In 2005, the AHL franchise of the Calgary Flames (the Saint John Flames, which existed from 1993 to 2003) was reestablished in Omaha. The ''Ak-Sar-Ben'' part of the team's name comes from the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben, an Omaha civic organization, whose logo was integrated into the insignia of the team and was a partner with the Omaha organization. Ak-Sar-Ben, which is "Nebraska" spelled backwards, was also the name of the arena of the original Omaha Knights. The team logo was shown with identical flame marks as the Calgary Flames' logo. Omaha Knights
The Omaha Knights was the name of three minor league professional ice hockey teams from 1959 to 1965 and from 1966 to 1975, based in Omaha, Nebraska, at the Ak-Sar-Ben Arena. The Knights were founded in 1959 as members of the International Hockey League. Following the 1962-63 season the team moved to Toledo, Ohio, becoming the Toledo Blades. A new Knights team joined the Central Professional Hockey League for the 1963-64 season. This second iteration of the Knights moved to Houston to become the Houston Apollos after the 1964-65 season. After a year without a team, hockey returned to Omaha for the 1966-67 season after the Minnesota Rangers moved from Saint Paul, Minnesota, to vacate the market that the National Hockey League's Minnesota North Stars would soon occupy. The Calgary Wranglers are a professional ice hockey team based in Calgary, that began play in the 2022–23 American Hockey League (AHL) season. The team plays at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the home of their NHL affiliate team, the Calgary Flames. Dustin James Boyd (born July 16, 1986) is a Canadian-Kazakhstani professional ice hockey player who is currently an unrestricted free agent. He was most recently under contract with Barys Nur-Sultan of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Playing career After playing two seasons with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League, Boyd was selected 98th overall in the third round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames. Andrei Sergeevich Taratukhin (born February 22, 1983) is a Russian professional ice hockey centre and he is currently playing for HSC Csíkszereda in the Erste Liga. Taratukhin was drafted 41st overall by the Calgary Flames in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Carsen Germyn (born February 22, 1982 in Campbell River, British Columbia) is a former professional ice hockey right wing who played 4 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Calgary Flames. Playing career Germyn played five seasons in the Western Hockey League. He played for the Kelowna Rockets and then for the Red Deer Rebels. Iowa Stars
The Iowa Stars, later known as the Iowa Chops, were a professional ice hockey team in the American Hockey League. The club was based in Des Moines, Iowa at the Wells Fargo Arena. History The Stars were founded by Howard Baldwin, of Hockey Holdings & Management Group, and Dallas businessman Bob Schlegel, who took the dormant Louisville Panthers AHL franchise and resurrected it for the 2005–06 season as the Iowa Stars (the same name as an earlier team in 1969-70 in the Central Hockey League). The 2005–06 AHL season was the 70th season of the American Hockey League. Twenty-seven teams played 80 games each in the schedule. The United Hockey League (UHL), originally known as the Colonial Hockey League from 1991 to 1997 and last known as the International Hockey League from 2007 to 2010, was a low-level minor professional ice hockey league, with teams in the United States and Canada. Quad City Mallards (1995–2007)
The Quad City Mallards were a minor professional ice hockey team in the United Hockey League. The Mallards played their home games at The MARK of the Quad Cities in Moline, Illinois. They won the Colonial Cup playoff championship in 1997, 1998, and 2001, as well as the Tarry Cup regular season championship in 1998, 2000, 2001, and 2002. The Mallards won 50 or more games in six consecutive seasons, from 1996–97 to 2001–02, a professional hockey record. They were also known for never having missed the playoffs in their years of existence. Knights Of Ak-Sar-Ben
The Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Foundation is a 501(c)(3) civic and philanthropic organization in Omaha, Nebraska. History The organization was formed in 1895 in an attempt to keep the Nebraska State Fair in Omaha after receiving an ultimatum to provide entertainment "other than saloons, gambling houses and honky tonks." The board's solution was to strike out to secure all the floats used that year in the Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans. While in New Orleans, they decided to model their organization on the parade's Krewe concept complete with "royalty" and "coronations." According to the organization's web site, Dudley Smith suggested a name for the new organization, and was quoted as saying, "Why not reverse the name of our beloved state, since everything seems to be going backwards these days?"
