Oshkosh () is a city in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, United States, and its county seat. It is located on the western shore of Lake Winnebago and had a population of 66,816 as of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, making it the List of cities in Wisconsin, ninth-most populous city in Wisconsin. It is also adjacent to the much less populous Oshkosh (town), Wisconsin, Town of Oshkosh in the north. Oshkosh Township was organized in 1879, and named after Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 36.3 square miles (94.0 km), all land. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 249 people, 83 households, and 66 families residing in the township. The population density was 6.9 people per square mile (2.6/km). There were 88 housing units at an average density of 2.4/sq mi (0.9/km). Oshkosh is a city in Garden County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 884 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Garden County. History Oshkosh was founded in the 1880s by cattlemen who found the surrounding area ideal for livestock grazing. It was named after the city of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The first post office in Oshkosh was established in 1889. The railroad was extended to Oshkosh in 1908, and Oshkosh was designated county seat in 1909 of the new Garden County. Oshkosh was incorporated in 1910. On April 26, 1938, an estimated F5 tornado struck near the city, disintegrating a school and killing 3 children; the tornado also destroyed two farms. Wells County is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 3,982. Its county seat is Fessenden. History The Dakota Territory legislature created the county on January 4, 1873. Its government was not organized at that time, nor was it attached for administrative or judicial purposes to another county. It was named Gingras County; this name continued until February 26, 1881, when the name was changed to Wells County, named for Edward Payson Wells, a Jamestown banker, early promoter of the James River Valley, and member of the legislature in 1881. The county government was organized on August 28, 1884, with Sykeston as the county seat. In 1894 the county seat was transferred to Fessendon. Chief Oshkosh (also spelled Os-kosh or Oskosh) (c. 1795 – August 31, 1858) was a chief of the Menominee Native Americans, recognized as the leader of the Menominee people by the United States government from August 7, 1827, until his death. He was involved in treaty negotiations as the United States sought to acquire more of the Menominee tribe's land in Wisconsin and Michigan for both white settlers and relocated Oneida, Stockbridge, Munsee, and Brothertown Indians. The Menominee ceded over 10,000,000 acres (40,000 km2) of land to the United States. However, Oshkosh resisted U.S. government pressure for the tribe to relocate to northern Minnesota and played a key role in securing the Menominee Indian Reservation as a permanent home for his people on their ancestral land. OshKosh B'gosh is an American children's apparel company founded in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It is a subsidiary of Carter's. OshKosh B'gosh has become best known for its children's clothing, especially bibbed overalls. The original children's overalls, dating from the early 20th century, were intended to let parents dress their children like their fathers. According to the company, sales of the product increased after Miles Kimball, an Oshkosh-based mail order catalog, featured a pair of the overalls in its national catalog in 1960. The University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh (UW Oshkosh or UWO) is a public university in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, United States. It is part of the University of Wisconsin System and offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs to around 13,000 students each year.
