Omar Monterola
Omar Monterola (born 1 August 1987) is a Paralympian athlete from Venezuela competing in category T37 sprinting events. Monterola qualified for the 2012 Summer Paralympics in the 100m, 200m and 400m sprints. He qualified for the finals of all three, winning the bronze medal in the 200m event. Career history Monterola, who has cerebral palsy, was inspired to take up parasport by his cousin Keisa, who was an international pole vaulter. He missed the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing due to an injury, but competed at the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch. At the World Championships he entered both the 100m and 200m sprints in the T37 category, but did not achieve a podium finish. He finished the year by representing Venezuela at the 2011 Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, where he dominated his field winning the gold in all three sprint events, the 100m, 200m and 400m. T38 (classification)
T38 and CP8 are disability sport classification for disability athletics intended for people with cerebral palsy. It includes people who have coordination impairments such as hypertonia, ataxia and athetosis. Runners in this class may appear to have a slight limp when they are running but otherwise have a stride similar to able-bodied runners. Events for this class include 100 meters, 400 meters, 1,500 meters, and the long jump. Sport This classification is for disability athletics. This classification is one of seven classifications for athletes with cerebral palsy. Similar classifications are T32, T33, T34, T35, T36, T37 and T38. The T35 to T38 classes are classes for ambulant sportspeople. The Australian Paralympic Committee defines this classification as being for "Minimal hemiplegia, ataxia, diplegia or athetosis. 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships
The 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships was held in Christchurch, New Zealand from January 21 to 30, 2011. Athletes with a disability competed, and the Championships was a qualifying event for the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Ove1000 athletescompeted, including Oscar Pistorius, the ''Blade Runner'', who competed in class T44 at the 100m, 4 × 100 m relay, 200m, and 400m events. A warm-up meet, with free entry for the audience, was held on Friday January 14. Estimates placed the total visitor spend in the city at around $12 million. Venue The championship was staged in the 20,000-seat Queen Elizabeth II Park stadium that was built in 1973 for the 1974 British Commonwealth Games. Three weeks after the championship closed, the venue was damaged beyond repair in the 22 February 2011 Christchurch earthquake and has since been demolished. Pole Vault
Pole vaulting, also known as pole jumping, is a track and field event in which an athlete uses a long and flexible pole, usually made from fiberglass or carbon fiber, as an aid to jump over a bar. Pole jumping competitions were known to the Mycenaean Greeks, Minoan Greeks and Celts. It has been a full medal event at the Olympic Games since 1896 for men and since 2000 for women. It is typically classified as one of the four major jumping events in athletics, alongside the high jump, long jump and triple jump. It is unusual among track and field sports in that it requires a significant amount of specialised equipment in order to participate, even at a basic level.
