Omar Minaya
Omar Teodoro Antonio Minaya y Sánchez (born November 10, 1958), whose nickname is O, is a Dominican baseball executive. He is the special assistant to the general manager of the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball. He previously served as general manager for the New York Mets and the Montreal Expos. Early life He was born in the Dominican Republic to Lolo Minaya and Antonia Sanchez. His mother named him for Omar Khayyam, the Persian poet. His father served two years in prison for anti-government activities. His father moved to Queens, New York City, and in 1967, when Minaya was eight years old, the rest of the family joined Lolo in Corona. He has two sisters, Adelina and Sixta. Sammy Sosa
Samuel Peralta Sosa (; born November 12, 1968) is a Dominican-American former professional baseball right fielder. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 18 seasons, primarily with the Chicago Cubs. After playing for the Texas Rangers and Chicago White Sox, Sosa joined the Cubs in 1992 and became regarded as one of the game's best hitters. DeWain Lee Stevens (born July 10, 1967) is an American former first baseman and designated hitter drafted by the California Angels in 1986. A highly regarded prospect, Stevens batted .314 with 19 home runs for the Triple A Edmonton Trappers in 1991. The Angels considered him heir apparent to popular first baseman Wally Joyner. However, in parts of three seasons he hit only .225 with little power. Jeffrey Harold Loria (born November 20, 1940) is an American entrepreneur, author, and the former owner of the Montreal Expos (now the Washington Nationals) and Miami Marlins of Major League Baseball. 2001 Major League Baseball Contraction Plan
On November 6, 2001, the owners of the 30 teams in Major League Baseball (MLB) voted to eliminate two teams, reportedly the Minnesota Twins and the Montreal Expos, for the 2002 season. According to Commissioner Bud Selig, the decision was made due to economic reasons, as "the teams to be contracted ada long record of failing to generate enough revenues to operate a viable major league franchise." Also factored into the contraction plan was the two teams' inability to fund the construction of new ballparks to replace the outdated Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome and Olympic Stadium. The contraction plan fell through due to a court injunction compelling the Twins to honor their lease with the Metrodome, as well as challenges by the players' labor union, the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA). The Montreal Expos () were a Canadian professional baseball team based in Montreal. The Expos were the first Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise located outside the United States.
