North West District (British Army)
North West District was a district command of the British Army from 1967 and 1991. History The district was formed from 42nd (East Lancashire) Infantry Division as part of the Territorial Army Volunteer Reserve in 1967. It had its headquarters at Cuerden Hall, and was placed under the command of HQ UK Land Forces in 1972. In 1991, the first of the minor districts to be amalgamated were North West District, the former West Midlands District (by then Western District) and Wales, to form a new Wales and Western District. Lieutenant-General Sir Alexander James Wilson KBE MC (13 April 1921 – 17 December 2004) was a British Army officer who commanded South East District. Military career Born the son of Major-General Bevil Wilson and educated at Winchester College and New College, Oxford, Wilson originally enlisted with the King's Shropshire Light Infantry and was then commissioned into the Rifle Brigade in 1941. Major General Colin Terry Shortis (18 January 1934 – 8 January 2017) was a senior British Army officer. Biography Born on 18 January 1934, Colin Shortis was educated at Bedford School. He enlisted in the British Army in 1951 and received his first commission in the Royal Fusiliers in 1953. Corran Purdon
Major-General Corran William Brooke Purdon (4 May 1921 – 27 June 2018) was an Irish-born career soldier in the British Army, who took part in the raid on St Nazaire as a commando for which he was awarded the Military Cross. He was subsequently a prisoner in Colditz Castle. Early life Purdon was born on 4 May 1921 in Rushbrooke, Queenstown (now called Cobh), near Cork, Ireland, during the Irish War of Independence. His father Major General William Purdon worked for the army as a medical officer and his mother Myrtle, from Belfast, was a homemaker.
