North Tyneside Borough Council
North Tyneside Council is the local authority of North Tyneside in Tyne and Wear, England. It is a metropolitan district council, one of five in Tyne and Wear and one of 36 in the metropolitan counties of England, and provides the majority of local government services in North Tyneside. History The current local authority was first elected in 1973, a year before formally coming into its powers and prior to the creation of the Metropolitan Borough of North Tyneside on 1 April 1974. The council held its meetings at Wallsend Town Hall until it moved to new premises at Cobalt Business Park in 2008. The Mayor of North Tyneside is the executive mayor of the borough of North Tyneside in Tyne and Wear, England. The incumbent since 2013 is Norma Redfearn. A Mayoral Referendum was held on 5 May 2016 to determine if residents wished to retain the Mayoral system or change to a Committee system. The number of votes for continuing with the mayoral system was 32,546, which was 57.5%, while 23,703 wanted a committee system - 41.8%. Referendum Elections 2002 2003 by-election A mayoral by-election was held on 12 June 2003, which was won by Linda Arkley of the Conservative Party, after Chris Morgan resigned after he was arrested in relation to police investigations over allegations of possessing indecent images of children. Wallsend Town Hall
Wallsend Town Hall is a municipal building on High Street East in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, England. The town hall, which was the headquarters of North Tyneside Council from 1974 to 2008, is a Grade II listed building. History After Wallsend became incorporated as a municipal borough in 1901, the new civic leaders initially met at the masonic hall in Station Road in Wallsend which had been completed in 1893. After finding this arrangement inadequate, civic leaders to decided to procure dedicated municipal buildings: the site they selected was open land on the south side of High Street East. The foundation stone for the new building was laid by the mayor, William Boyd, in 1907. It was designed by E. F. W. Liddle and P. L. Brown in the Edwardian Baroque style, was built at a cost of £15,557 and was officially opened by Alderman George Allan in September 1908. Cobalt Business Park
Cobalt Park is a business park located in North Tyneside, England. It is one of the largest business parks in the United Kingdom. History Initially known as Hadrian Business Park plans for the area were devised the early 1990s by the Tyne and Wear Economic Development Company. Work began on building Cobalt Park in 1996 when the site was purchased and it was initially to house businesses employing 5,000 people on a site of . Part of the development was made a designated Enterprise Zone in 1995. The region had previously been noted for its large mining industry and because of this the development had to secure 5 disused mine shafts that ran through the site. In 1997 Highbridge Business Park Limited (a joint venture between Highbridge Properties and Ashall Group) became developers of the park and the development took on its Cobalt name. Norma Redfearn
Dame Norma Redfearn is a Labour politician serving as the directly-elected Mayor of North Tyneside. Early life Redfearn was born in Wallsend. The daughter of a shipyard worker, she graduated with a BPhil from Newcastle University. Teaching career Redfearn had a 30-year career in primary and secondary education. After a variety of teaching jobs, she left Wharrier Street Juniors in June 1986, where she was deputy head, to head West Walker Primary School, east of Newcastle upon Tyne. She stayed there until July 2000. In June 1989 the school won an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects for its playground design, presented to Redfearn and a pupil by Charles III. then the Prince of Wales. Tyne And Wear
Tyne and Wear () is a metropolitan county in North East England, situated around the mouths of the rivers Tyne and Wear. It was created in 1974, by the Local Government Act 1972, along with five metropolitan boroughs of Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside. It is bordered by Northumberland to the north and Durham to the south; the county boundary was formerly split between these counties with the border as the River Tyne. The former county council was based at Sandyford House. There is no longer county level local governance following the county council disbanding in 1986, by the Local Government Act 1985, with the metropolitan boroughs functioning separately.
