North Harbour, Newfoundland And Labrador
North Harbour, St. Mary's Bay, Newfoundland (not to be confused with North Harbour, Placentia Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador) is a fishing community located on both sides of a long, narrow inlet of the same name. While the harbour is open to southwest winds, it is clear of dangers beyond its shores, and is sheltered enough to have been a refuge for many vessels in the past. It was probably settled in the late 18th or early 19th century by the Powers family. North Harbour was adjacent to excellent cod fishing grounds. This community is also near good hunting grounds and several salmon rivers. However, the fertile soil was the main reason for its settlement. In the 19th century, North Harbour had more farmers than fishermen. In the 20th century, however, fishermen came to dominate the workforce. By 1992, most people went to work in other places. Admiral's Beach
Admirals Beach is a rural community located in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Previously spelled Admiral's Beach, it is a fishing port located on the island of Newfoundland; specifically it is along a point of land in the southern Avalon Peninsula near Great Colinet Island fronting St. Mary's Bay. The community was incorporated in January 1968. Geography Good fishing grounds and a sheltered cove attracted the first settlers to the area. The town is part of Division 1 and is bounded by St. Mary's Bay and the unorganized area Subdivision W. Nearby communities include St. Joseph's, Riverhead and St. Mary's. History Admirals Beach was first settled in the early nineteenth century by a French admiral. In 1864 there were three families living there. By 1911 it had a Post Office and a population of 39. A fish factory, also called a fish plant, fish processing facility, is a facility where fish processing is performed. Fish factories range in the size and range of species of fish they process. Some species of fish, such as mackerel and herring, and can be caught at sea by large pelagic trawlers and offloaded to the factory within a few days of being caught. Or the fish can be caught by freezer trawlers that freeze the fish before providing it to factories, or by factory ships which can do the processing themselves on board. Some fish factories have fishing vessels catching fish for them at a given times of the year. This is to do with quotas and seasons conflicting how much and when the fish can be landed. An outport is any port considered secondary to a main port (including a provincial one as opposed to a capital one), and often (especially) a small port built to support the commercial operations of a large port.
