North Beach (album)
''North Beach'' is a compilation album by American jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi (credited to Vince Guaraldi and Friends) released by D & D Records (Guaraldi's label) in January 2006. The album is a mix of previously unreleased studio and live recordings taped in mid-1970s. Background In the mid-2000s, Vince Guaraldi's son, David Guaraldi, worked to restore a wealth of unreleased live recorded material from his father's archives. The recordings on ''North Beach'' were taped in a variety of studios and jazz clubs based in the North Beach, San Francisco, North Beach region of San Francisco, California. The release features covers of Elton John's "Your Song" and Frank Sinatra's "It Was a Very Good Year". ''North Beach'' was released on CD only. It did not receive a vinyl release. Vince Guaraldi
Vincent Anthony Guaraldi (; né Dellaglio, July 17, 1928 – February 6, 1976) was an American jazz pianist best known for composing music for animated television adaptations of the ''Peanuts'' comic strip. His compositions for this series included their signature melody " Linus and Lucy" and the holiday standard " Christmas Time Is Here". He is also known for his performances on piano as a member of Cal Tjader's 1950s ensembles and for his own solo career. His 1962 composition "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" became a radio hit and won a Grammy Award in 1963 for Best Original Jazz Composition. He died of a sudden heart attack in February 1976 at age 47, moments after concluding a nightclub performance in Menlo Park, California. Bernie Taupin
Bernard John Taupin (born 22 May 1950) is an English songwriter, singer and visual artist. He is best known for his long-term collaboration with musician Elton John, a songwriting partnership that is one of the most successful in history. Taupin has written the lyrics for most of John's songs. In 1967, Taupin answered an advertisement in the music paper ''New Musical Express'' placed by Liberty Records, a company that was seeking new songwriters. The Solina String Ensemble, also marketed as the ARP String Ensemble, is a fully polyphonic multi-orchestral synthesizer with a 49-key keyboard, produced by Eminent BV (known for their ''Solina'' brand). It was distributed in the United States by ARP Instruments from 1974 to 1981. The sounds it incorporates are violin, viola, trumpet, horn, cello, and contrabass. The keyboard uses 'organ style' divide-down technology to make it polyphonic. The built-in chorus effect gives the instrument its distinctive sound. Michael Jeffrey Clark (born October 3, 1946) is an American drummer. He gained worldwide recognition as one of America's foremost jazz and funk drummers while playing with Herbie Hancock in the early 1970s. His incisive playing on Hancock's ''Actual Proof'' garnered him an international cult following and influenced generations of drummers throughout the world. Clark was born in Sacramento, California, United States. He traveled around the country with his father, a drummer himself and a union man for the railroad. Ron McClure
Ron McClure (born November 22, 1941) is an American jazz bassist. Early life McClure was born in New Haven, Connecticut, United States. He started on piano at age five, and later played accordion and bass. McClure studied privately with Joseph Iadone and, later, with Hall Overton and Don Sebesky. McClure attended the Hartt School of Music, graduating in 1963. Later life and career McClure worked in the Buddy Rich Sextet in 1963. He then joined Maynard Ferguson's big band and, afterwards, Herbie Mann in 1964; and then assumed the bass chair in the Wynton Kelly Trio vacated by Paul Chambers in 1965 (playing behind guitarist Wes Montgomery). Eliot Zigmund
Eliot Zigmund (born April 14, 1945) is an American jazz drummer, who has worked extensively as a session musician. Biography Zigmund studied at Mannes School of Music and City College of New York, where he graduated in 1969. After moving to California, he found work in the 1970s playing with Ron McClure, Steve Swallow, Art Lande, Mike Nock, Mel Martin, and Vince Guaraldi. He moved back to New York City in 1974, where he played with Bill Evans from 1975 to 1978. He also played with Eddie Gómez, Bennie Wallace, Richard Beirach, Jim Hall, Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Fred Hersch, and Red Mitchell before the end of the 1970s. Jefferson is a town in and the county seat of Ashe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. ''Live on the Air'' is a live performance double CD by American jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi (credited to the Vince Guaraldi Trio), released November 14, 2008 through D & D Records (Guaraldi's label). Background ''Live on the Air'' consists of a live performance recorded on February 6, 1974 (two years to the day before Guaraldi's premature death), at Wally Heider Studios in San Francisco, California. The performance was broadcast live by radio stations KPFA and KPFB. Tracks 1-8 were performed for the original broadcast. The sound engineer then advised Guaraldi and his trio to "play until your heart's content" (Track 9), resulting in three additional songs performed for the studio audience. ''Alma-Ville'' is the 12th and final studio album by American jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi, released in the U.S. by Warner Bros.-Seven Arts in December 1969. Background Vince Guaraldi's final three albums released during his lifetime were recorded for Warner Bros.-Seven Arts after spending considerable time struggling to extricate himself from Fantasy Records. Warner signed Guaraldi to a three-record deal, and insisted that his inaugural release consist of his ''Peanuts'' songs. Guaraldi responded with new renditions of eight of his most popular scores from those programs on his first release, ''Oh Good Grief!''. John Kander
John Harold Kander (born March 18, 1927) is an American composer, known largely for his work in the musical theater. As part of the songwriting team Kander and Ebb (with lyricist Fred Ebb), Kander wrote the scores for 15 musicals, including ''Cabaret'' (1966) and ''Chicago'' (1975), both of which were later adapted into acclaimed films. He and Ebb also wrote the standard "New York, New York" (also known as "Theme from ''New York, New York''"). Fred Ebb (April 8, 1928 – September 11, 2004) was an American musical theatre lyricist who had many successful collaborations with composer John Kander. The Kander and Ebb team frequently wrote for such performers as Liza Minnelli and Chita Rivera.
