Nordhoff High School
Nordhoff High School (NHS), originally Nordhoff Union High School, is a public high school in Ojai, California that serves the Ojai Valley. The school, established in 1910, is part of the Ojai Unified School District. History The original Nordhoff High School campus was located at 703 El Paseo Road, which is now the site of Matilija Middle School. The original school buildings, located in an area known as the "Arbolada", were built/rebuilt in the late 1920s using traditional Spanish Mission-style architecture. The school moved to its current location in 1966. Today, MMS still features large tiles with the initials "NUHS" on the steps of the athletic field. The school takes its name from the town of Ojai's original name of Nordhoff. The town, in turn, was named in honor of the author Charles Nordhoff who wrote the book ''California for Health, Pleasure and Residence'', published in June 1872. Ojai ( ; Chumash: ''’Awhaỳ'') is a city in Ventura County, California. Located in the Ojai Valley, it is northwest of Los Angeles and east of Santa Barbara. The valley is part of the east–west trending Western Transverse Ranges and is about long by wide and divided into a lower and an upper valley, each of similar size, surrounded by hills and mountains. The population was 7,637 at the 2020 census, up from 7,461 at the 2010 census. Ojai is a tourism destination known for its boutique hotels, recreation opportunities, hiking, and farmers' market of local organic agriculture. It has small businesses specializing in local and ecologically friendly art, design, and home improvement. Chain stores are prohibited by city ordinance to encourage local small business development and keep the town unique. Nordhoff Station
Nordhoff station is a station on the G Line of the Los Angeles Metro Busway system located in the Chatsworth neighborhood of Los Angeles in the western San Fernando Valley. The station opened in June 2012 and was built as part of the Metro Orange Line Chatsworth Extension. Metro's Division 8 (West San Fernando Valley) bus depot is located directly west of the station. This is the assigned bus division where all Metro Orange Line vehicles are parked and where maintenance is done. A direct bus only lane connection to the bus division was built as part of the Chatsworth Extension. The G Line station is located at the intersection of Canoga Avenue and Nordhoff Street. The station's amenities include bicycle lockers and public art in the form of a 27-foot mosaic. A parking lot was not assigned for this station. Heinrich Nordhoff
Heinz Heinrich Nordhoff (6 January 1899 – 12 April 1968) was a German engineer who led the Volkswagen company as it was rebuilt after World War II. Life and career Nordhoff was born in Hildesheim, the son of a banker. He graduated from the Technical University of Berlin, where he became a member of the Roman Catholic fraternity Askania-Burgundia, and in 1927, began work for BMW working on aircraft engines. In 1929 he went to work for Opel, where he gained experience of the automotive industry and, since the company had been acquired by General Motors not long before, of American practices in the field. He was rapidly promoted: in 1936 he was the Commercial-Technical director who presented the company's innovative new small car, the Kadett, to the public. In 1942, with passenger car production much diminished on account of the war, he took over from Gerd Stieler von Heydekampf as Production Director at the company's flagship truck plant at Brandenburg. Charles Bernard Nordhoff (February 1, 1887 – April 10, 1947) was an American novelist and traveler, born in England. Nordhoff is perhaps best known for '' The Bounty Trilogy'', three historical novels he wrote with James Norman Hall: ''Mutiny on the Bounty'' (1932), '' Men Against the Sea'' (1934) and '' Pitcairn's Island'' (1934). During World War I, he served as a driver in the Ambulance Corps as well as an aviator in both the French Air Force's Lafayette Flying Corps and the United States Army Air Service, reaching the rank of lieutenant. After the war, Nordhoff spent much of his life on the island of Tahiti, where he and Hall wrote a number of successful adventure books, many adapted for film.
