Nijeveen
Nijeveen is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Meppel, and lies about 5 km northwest of Meppel. History The village was first mentioned in 1310 as "in Hesselrevene", and means "new bog". Nijeveen is a road village which started as a peat Peat (), also known as turf (), is an accumulation of partially decayed vegetation or organic matter. It is unique to natural areas called peatlands, bogs, mires, moors, or muskegs. The peatland ecosystem covers and is the most efficient ... excavation settlement. In 1477, a piece of land was purchased by the farmers in the centre of the hamlet to built a church and clergy house. The church was enlarged in 1627 and the 18th century. The tower dates shortly after 1477, but has a date of 1683 when it is probably restored or rebuilt. Nijeveen was home to 390 people in 1840. De Sterrenberg, Nijeveen
De Sterrenberg is a smock mill in Nijeveen, Drenthe the Netherlands. It was built in 1977. The mill is listed as a Rijksmonument, number 30957. (Click on "Technische gegevens" to view) History The windmill in Nijeveen was demolished in 1928. In the 1970s, it was decided that Nijeveen should have a windmill again, and a search was made for a suitable replacement. ''De Sterrenberg'' was originally built at Weener, Lower Saxony, Germany in 1786. The mill was dismantled in 1976 and rebuilt brick by brick in Nijeveen. The mill is named for its former owners in Germany, the Sterrenberg family. On 13 January 1977, the smock was placed on the new brick base. The millwright responsible for the rebuild was the firm Schakel of Exmorra, Friesland. The base was built by the firm Elphenhof of De Wijk. Meppel
Meppel (; Drents: ''Möppelt'') is a city and municipality in the Northeastern Netherlands. It constitutes the southwestern part of the province of Drenthe. Meppel is the smallest municipality in Drenthe, with a total area of about 57 km² (22 sq mi). As of 1 July 2021, it had a population of 34,506 with over 30,000 inhabitants within city limits. People born in Meppel are occasionally referred to as ''Meppeler Muggen'' in Dutch; this translates as 'mosquitoes from Meppel'. The nickname comes from a traditional folk tale. The people of Meppel thought the church tower was on fire, but after closer inspection, they realised it was only a swarm of mosquitoes.
