Ngarkat Conservation Park
Ngarkat Conservation Park is a protected area located in South Australia's south-eastern corner about south east of the Adelaide city centre. The conservation park was proclaimed in 1979 "to conserve the mallee heath habitat of the 90 Mile Desert". On 27 May 2004, the following conservation parks which adjoined the boundaries of the Ngarkat Conservation Park were incorporated into the conservation park and then abolished - Mount Rescue Conservation Park, Mount Shaugh Conservation Park and Scorpion Springs Conservation Park. The conservation park is classified as an IUCN Category Ia protected area. The conservation park occupies in land in a number of gazetted localities with the majority being in Ngarkat and the remainder being in Parilla, Parrakie and Pinnaroo. __NOTOC__ Ngarkat is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located in the south-east of the state at the border with the state of Victoria in both the Murray Mallee and the Limestone Coast regions about south east of the state capital of Adelaide. Its boundaries were created firstly in August 1999 for the part in the Southern Mallee District Council followed by the part in the Tatiara District Council during March 2000 and finally by the part in the Coorong District Council during August 2000. Its name is derived from the Ngarkat Conservation Park. The principal land use within the locality is conservation with the majority of the land being located in the Ngarkat Conservation Park with the exception of a parcel of land between the Ngarkat Highway and the Victorian border within the Tatiara District Council. __NOTOC__ Scorpion Springs Conservation Park (formerly Scorpion Well National Park) was a protected area in the Australian state of South Australia located in the state’s south-east in the locality of Pinnaroo at the border with the state of Victoria about south-east of the state capital of Adelaide and about south of the town of Pinnaroo. The mallee emu-wren (''Stipiturus mallee'') is a species of bird in the Australasian wren family, Maluridae. It is endemic to Australia. Its natural habitat is temperate grassland. It is threatened because of habitat loss. Taxonomy and systematics The mallee emu-wren is one of three species of the genus ''Stipiturus'', commonly known as emu-wrens. Within the genus, the mallee emu-wren and the rufous crowned emu-wren are sister species. It was first described in 1908 by Archibald James Campbell on the basis of a male specimen sent to him by C.H. McLennan from the Mallee district. Campbell thought that it was an intermediate form between the southern and rufous-crowned emu-wren and described as ''Stipiturus mallee''. Wyperfeld, Big Desert And Ngarkat Important Bird Area
The Wyperfeld, Big Desert and Ngarkat Important Bird Area comprises a 9743 km2 tract of semiarid mallee woodlands and shrublands in south-eastern Australia, straddling the border between the states of South Australia and Victoria. Description The site incorporates a large area of contiguous mallee habitat. It overlaps the following protected areas, the Ngarkat Conservation Park in south-east South Australia and the Wyperfeld National Park and the Big Desert Wilderness Park in north-west Victoria, as well as several adjacent smaller reserves and state forests. The Victorian part of the site contains a chain of ephemeral lakes connected by Outlet Creek, the northern section of the Wimmera River.
