Newmarket Royals
The Newmarket Royals were a junior ice hockey team in the Ontario Hockey League from 1992 to 1994. They played out of Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. History The Royals franchise started in 1969 as the Cornwall Royals of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The Cornwall Royals won the Memorial Cup in 1972, 1980, and in 1981. For the 1981–82 season, the team transferred into the Ontario Hockey League. In 1992 the Cornwall Royals moved to Newmarket, Ontario to play as the Newmarket Royals. This team should be not be confused with a different Newmarket Royals team in the OMHA in the early 1980s. The first year for the Newmarket Royals was moderately successful, finishing 5th in the Leyden Division with a winning record. In the playoffs that year the Royals faced the Sudbury Wolves in a very heated 7 game series, won by the Wolves. Newmarket, Ontario
Newmarket ( 2021 population: 87,942) is a town and regional seat of the Regional Municipality of York in the Canadian province of Ontario. It is part of Greater Toronto in the Golden Horseshoe region of Southern Ontario. The name stems from the fact that the settlement was a "New Market", in contrast to York as the ''Old Market''. The town was formed as one of many farming communities in the area, but also developed an industrial centre on the Northern Railway of Canada's mainline, which was built in 1853 through what would become the downtown area. It also became a thriving market town with the arrival of the Metropolitan Street Railway in 1899. Over time, the town developed into a primarily residential area, and the expansion of Ontario Highway 400 to the west and the construction of Ontario Highway 404 to the east increasingly turned it into a bedroom town since the 1980s. The 1992–93 OHL season was the 13th season of the Ontario Hockey League. The Cornwall Royals become the Newmarket Royals. The Detroit Compuware Ambassadors are renamed the Detroit Junior Red Wings. The inaugural OHL Humanitarian of the Year is awarded. Sixteen teams each played 66 games. The Peterborough Petes won the J. Ross Robertson Cup, defeating the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Relocation and Rebranding Cornwall Royals to Newmarket Royals The Cornwall Royals relocated to the city of Newmarket, Ontario and were named the Newmarket Royals. The team would play at the Newmarket Recreational Complex. The club was established in 1969 in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, as Cornwall won the Memorial Cup three times, in 1972, 1980 and 1981. Alek Stojanov
Alexander Stojanov (born April 25, 1973) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player of Macedonian descent who spent three seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). He is best known for his trade from Vancouver to Pittsburgh in exchange for Markus Näslund, in what is recognized as one of the most lopsided trades in the history of the NHL. Selected seventh overall in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft, he is now widely regarded as a draft bust. Jeremy Stevenson
Jeremy Joseph Stevenson (born July 28, 1974) is an American-born Canadian former professional ice hockey left winger who last played for the Kalamazoo Wings of the International Hockey League. Early life Born in San Bernardino, California, Stevenson grew up in Elliot Lake, Ontario, where he played for the Elliot Lake Vikings of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League. Career Stevenson was originally drafted in the third round, 60th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. He was later drafted in the 11th round, 262nd overall, by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. Grant Marshall
Grant W. Marshall (born June 9, 1973) is a Canadian former ice hockey right winger who currently works on behalf of the Devils Alumni Association. He played for the Dallas Stars, Columbus Blue Jackets and New Jersey Devils of the NHL. He last played for the Devils' minor league affiliate, the Lowell Devils, during the 2007-08 season. Career Born in Port Credit, Ontario, Marshall was drafted 23rd overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. Marshall has played 700 career NHL games, scoring 92 goals and 147 assists for 239 points. Alan Letang
Alan Letang (born September 4, 1975) is a Canadian- Croatian former professional ice hockey player. In 2021, he was named the head coach for the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League. Playing career Letang was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the 8th round, 203rd overall in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. He has played 14 games in the National Hockey League for the Dallas Stars, Calgary Flames and New York Islanders. Letang played for the Hamburg Freezers of the German Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) from 2004 to 2007, before joining fellow DEL outfit Nürnberg Ice Tigers for the 2007–08 season.
