New Harrisburg, Ohio
New Harrisburg is an unincorporated community in Harrison Township, Carroll County, Ohio, United States. The community is part of the Canton– Massillon Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community is served by the Carrollton post office, and has ZIP code 44615. It lies on State route 171. History The village was platted by Jacob Harsh on December 26, 1828, along the Steubenville– Canton stage coach line established by Bezaleel Wells. It succeeded as a town until it was bypassed by the Connotton Valley Railroad. When Carroll County was considering a new courthouse in the early 1880s, a local merchant offered ten acres to relocate the county seat, but was unsuccessful. A writer in 1920 noted there was "nothing to note a commercial interest at this point – it only remains a memory of the older citizens of the county." State Route 171 (SR 171) is a west–east state highway located in northeastern Ohio. The highway's western terminus is at a signalized intersection with SR 183 in Waynesburg. The eastern terminus of SR 171 is at SR 9 approximately north of Carrollton. Route description SR 171's routing takes it through the southeastern corner of Stark County and the northwestern portion of Carroll County. No part of SR 171 is included within the National Highway System. The Church of the United Brethren in Christ is an evangelical Christian denomination with churches in 17 countries. It is Protestant, with an episcopal structure and Arminian theology, with roots in the Mennonite and German Reformed communities of 18th-century Pennsylvania, as well as close ties to Methodism. It was organized in 1800 by Martin Boehm and Philip William Otterbein and is the first American denomination that was not transplanted from Europe. It emerged from United Brethren churches that were at first unorganized, and not all of which joined this church when it was formally organized in 1800, following a 1789 conference at the Otterbein Church (Baltimore, Maryland). Jonathan Weaver (February 23, 1824 – February 6, 1901) was a 19th-century bishop of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, and employed by Otterbein College. Early life Weaver was born in Harrison Township, Carroll County, Ohio Harrison Township is one of the fourteen townships of Carroll County, Ohio, United States. Carroll County Courthouse (Ohio)
The Carroll County Courthouse is located in Carrollton, Ohio, and is the second for the county. It was designed by architect Frank Weary in the Second Empire style. The courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on 1974-10-22. History Carroll County was established in 1833 and carved from Columbiana, Harrison, Jefferson, Stark and Tuscarawas counties. The first courthouse was built in Carrollton in 1834 and was a simple two-story brick building with a cupola topping off the structure. The first courthouse was designed by Peter Herold and James McMullin was contracted as the builder. When McMullin failed to meet expectations and the contract was awarded to John Lacey who also failed to honor his contract. The county wished to finish the construction and in desperation placed the contract with John Rankin. Steubenville is a city in and the county seat of Jefferson County, Ohio, United States. Located along the Ohio River 33 miles west of Pittsburgh, it had a population of 18,161 at the 2020 census.
