Nelson Davidyan
Nelson Davidyan ( hy, Նելսոն Դավթյան, 6 April 1950 – 11 September 2016) was a Soviet Armenian people, Armenian Greco-Roman wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestler and coach. He was an Olympic silver medalist and two-time World and European Champion. Biography Davidyan was born in the village of Chartar within the Martuni Region of Nagorno-Karabakh to an Armenian family. His family moved to Grozny in 1958 and later to Kiev. Davidyan began wrestling in the Greco-Roman style in 1964 and made the Soviet national team in 1969. He made his international début at the 1970 European Wrestling Championships, where he was sixth in the bantamweight division. Moving up to featherweight, Davidyan won the 1973 European Championship and then, moving up again to lightweight, won the 1974 World Wrestling Championships as a last minute replacement for Shamil Khisamutdinov. Chartar ( hy, Ճարտար; az, Çartar) is a town ''de facto'' in the Martuni Province of the Political status of Nagorno-Karabakh, breakaway Republic of Artsakh, ''de jure'' in the Khojavend District of Azerbaijan, in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. Martuni Province ( hy, Մարտունու շրջան) is a province of the breakaway Republic of Artsakh, ''de jure'' part of the Republic of Azerbaijan. History The territory was formed from the Soviet-era raion of Martuni District within the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast. The eastern part of that district is under the control of the Azerbaijan. Martuni Province consists of the branch of the former Oblast which juts out farthest to the east, almost reaches Stepanakert on the west, and goes a little past Karmir Shuka on the south. The western half has many hills and small mountains, full of small villages, while the eastern half is very flat, with fewer villages, and the larger regional center of Martuni.
