Robert Nelles
Robert Nelles (October 6, 1761 – July 27, 1842) was a businessman and political figure in Upper Canada. He was born in Stone Arabia, now known as Nelliston, in Tryon County, New York in 1761. His father, Hendrick William Nelles, served in the Indian Department from 1759-1760, during the French and Indian War and his grandfather, William Nelles, arrived in New York in 1710, and enlisted in the colonial forces for the Quebec Expedition in 1711. Robert was made a lieutenant in the department in 1780 and served during the American Revolution, leading around 60 raids into the interior of New York state in 1781. After the war, father and son settled in the Grand River valley as United Empire Loyalists and received several large land grants in the Niagara District. Nelles built mills and a store on the current site of the town of Grimsby. He also built an early Georgian style manor, which was completed in 1798 (now Nelles Manor Museum). Walter Nelles
Walter Nelles (1883–1937) was an American lawyer and law professor. Nelles is best remembered as the co-founder and first chief legal counsel of the National Civil Liberties Bureau and its successor, the American Civil Liberties Union. In this connection, Nelles achieved public notice for his legal work on behalf of pacifists charged with violating the Espionage Act during World War I and in other politically charged civil rights and constitutional law cases in later years. Maurice Nelles
Maurice Nelles (October 19, 1906 - August 30, 1998) was an engineer, business executive and professor. Early life and education Nelles was born in Madison, South Dakota. Nelles earned a bachelor's degree in 1927 and a master's degree in 1928, both from the University of South Dakota and earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1934. While at Harvard, he held the Charles A. Coffin Fellowship and the George H. Emerson and Harvard scholarships. Career During World War II, Nelles worked at Lockheed Corporation and the War Production Board. While at Lockheed, Nelles and his coworkers Morlan A. Visel and Ernest L. Black proposed a "Pacific Research Foundation" which eventually became SRI International. After Lockheed, Nelles became a professor of aeronautical engineering at the University of Southern California, where he designed the laboratory ship Velero IV. Samuel Sobieski Nelles (October 17, 1823 – October 17, 1887) was a Canadian Methodist minister and academic. Born in Mount Pleasant in what was then Upper Canada, Nelles was the eldest son of William Nelles and Mary Hardy who had immigrated to Canada from New York state after the War of 1812. Nelles was educated in local schools, the Lewiston Academy, the Frederica Academy, and the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary.
