Nauwigewauk
Nauwigewauk is a rural community in Kings County, New Brunswick, Canada. It is located near the communities of Quispamsis and Lakeside at the mouth of the Hammond River, and borders the town of Hampton. The people of Nauwigewauk are sometimes locally known as Nauwigewaukies. Name Nauwigewauk was named in 1858 by the commissioners of the European and North American Railway. The names derives from ''Nuhwig'ewauk'', the Maliseet name for the Hammond River, possibly meaning "slow current." History Nauwigewauk was a station on the European and North American Railway and, later, on the Canadian National Railway. As of 2015, the CNR's single-track Sussex Subdivision still runs through the community to provide rail service connecting the Port of Saint John to the CN main line at Moncton. The town's station is defunct. The community had a post office from c. 1885 until 1969. In 1898, the town had a population of 150, one post office, one store, and two churches. Hampton Parish, New Brunswick
Hampton is a civil parish in Kings County, New Brunswick, Canada. For governance purposes it is divided between the towns of Hampton and Quispamsis and then local service district of the parish of Hampton, which further includes the service area of Fairmont Subdivision. Hampton and the LSD are members of Regional Service Commission 8 (RSC8), while Quispamsis is a member of the Fundy Regional Service Commission (FRSC). Origin of name Ganong believed the name "perhaps" came from Hampton near London. The name was common in the Thirteen Colonies. Hammond River
The Hammond River is a tributary of the Kennebecasis River in New Brunswick, Canada. It runs approximately in southern Kings County along the border of Saint John County. It rises in the Caledonia Highlands near the rural community of Hammondvale and runs in a westerly direction to its junction with the Kennebecasis River. Near the mouth of the river, at the rural community of Nauwigewauk, the river is joined by a short tributary draining Darlings Lake. The Hammond River is one of the few rivers in the world that still has spawning Atlantic salmon. It was named for Andrew Hamond, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia from 1781 to 1782, who owned land in the area. Anna Ruth Lang
Anna Ruth Lang is a recipient of the Canadian Cross of Valour. On the ninth of September 1980 Anna Lang rescued two car passengers, named Lana and her four-year-old son, Jaye Walsh. At the entry of the Hammond River bridge a gasoline truck hit Mrs. Lang's car from behind and rammed it off the bridge and into the river. At that point the tanker fell into the river and exploded. The water was burning hot, and their car sank quickly. Lana was trying to swim to shore in her heavy clothes while holding her son. Suffering a concussion and under threat of spreading fire, Anna Lang swam to shore and removed her heavy clothing, and then returned to Lana and her son. Mrs Lang managed to reach Lana and Jaye Walsh and drag them to a safe distance from the fire and to shore. She suffered extreme burns during the rescue. She was awarded the Cross of Valour, the highest ranking of the Canadian Bravery Decorations, one of 20 who has received the award since the award was established in 1972. Two ... Maliseet
The Wəlastəkwewiyik, or Maliseet (, also spelled Malecite), are an Algonquian-speaking First Nation of the Wabanaki Confederacy. They are the indigenous people of the Wolastoq ( Saint John River) valley and its tributaries. Their territory extends across the current borders of New Brunswick and Quebec in Canada, and parts of Maine in the United States. The Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, based on the Meduxnekeag River in the Maine portion of their traditional homeland, are since 19 July 1776, the first foreign treaty allies with the United States of America. They are a federally recognized tribe of Maliseet people. Today Maliseet people have also migrated to other parts of the world. European And North American Railway
The European and North American Railway (E&NA) is the name for three historic Canadian and American railways which were built in New Brunswick and Maine. The idea of the E&NA as a single system was conceived at a railway conference in Portland, Maine in 1850 by railroad entrepreneur John A. Poor. The line was intended to link Portland (the eastern terminus of the US rail network) with an ice-free Atlantic port in Nova Scotia to connect with fast trans-Atlantic ships from Europe; the port at Halifax was discussed as a possible eastern terminus for the line, as was Canso. The concept was also discussed throughout the early 1850s in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Maine as a means to connect the British colonies with the railway network of the United Province of Canada. Hampton, New Brunswick
Hampton (2016 population: 4,289) is a town in Kings County, New Brunswick, Canada. Located on the Kennebecasis River 30 kilometres northeast of Saint John, Hampton is the shire town of Kings County. It functioned as the seat of county government between 1870 and 1965 (when county governments were abolished) and is today a service centre for the central Kennebecasis River valley, as well as being a suburb of Saint John. Hampton also has its own RCMP detachment that was built in 1999.
