Open access (OA) is a set of principles and a range of practices through which research outputs are distributed online, free of access charges or other barriers. As a general definition, paradata are usage data about learning resources that include not just quantitative metrics (e.g., how many times a piece of content was accessed), but also pedagogic context, as inferred through the actions of educators and learners. The Analytical Sciences Digital Library (ASDL) was founded in 2001 as one of several digital libraries in the National Science Digital Library, funded by the National Science Foundation.
