Nathan H. Juran
Naftuli Hertz "Nathan" Juran (September 1, 1907 – October 23, 2002) was a Romanian film art director, and later film and television director. As an art director, he won the Oscar for Best Art Direction in 1942 for ''How Green Was My Valley'', along with Richard Day and Thomas Little. His work on '' The Razor's Edge'' in 1946 also received an Academy nomination. In the 1950s, he began to direct, and was known for science fiction and fantasy films such as ''Attack of the 50 Foot Woman''. He was also the brother of quality guru Joseph M. Juran. Life and career Early life Juran was born to a Jewish family in Gura Humorului, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now Romania). In 1912, he emigrated to America with his family, settling in Minneapolis. ''Land Raiders'' is a 1970 American Western film directed by Nathan Juran and starring Telly Savalas, George Maharis, Arlene Dahl and Janet Landgard. It was produced by Charles H. Schneer, who was best known for producing most of Ray Harryhausen's features, three of which were also directed by Juran. Plot In the 1870s Arizona town of Forge River, cattle baron Vince Carden (Telly Savalas) is estranged from his brother, Paul (George Maharis). The men are of Mexican ancestry but Vince has renounced that part of his heritage. Vince hates Native Americans and pays out bounties on Indian scalps, then benefits financially by being able to buy up the cheap land caused by the strife and bloodshed.
