''The New Zealand Herald'' is a daily newspaper published in Auckland, New Zealand, owned by New Zealand Media and Entertainment, and considered a newspaper of record for New Zealand. It has the largest newspaper circulation of all newspapers in New Zealand, peaking at over 200,000 copies in 2006, although circulation of the daily ''Herald'' had declined to 100,073 copies on average by September 2019. Its main circulation area is the Auckland region. It is also delivered to much of the upper North Island including Northland, Waikato and King Country. History ''The New Zealand Herald'' was founded by William Chisholm Wilson, and first published on 13 November 1863. Wilson had been a partner with John Williamson in the ''New Zealander'', but left to start a rival daily newspaper as he saw a business opportunity with Auckland's rapidly growing population. Compact (newspaper)
A compact newspaper is a broadsheet-quality newspaper printed in a tabloid format, especially one in the United Kingdom. The term as used for this size came into use after '' The Independent'' began producing a smaller format edition in 2003 for London's commuters, designed to be easier to read when using mass transit. Readers from other parts of the country liked the new format, and ''The Independent'' introduced it nationally. ''The Times'' and '' The Scotsman'' copied the format as ''The Independent'' increased in sales. ''The Times'' and ''The Scotsman'' are now printed exclusively in compact format following trial periods during which both broadsheet and compact version were produced simultaneously. Malcolm Evans (cartoonist)
Malcolm Paul Evans (born 20 December 1945) is a New Zealand Anti-Semitic cartoonist residing in Auckland. Up until September 2014, Evans' cartoons appeared daily in three major New Zealand newspapers, The '' Manawatu Standard'', '' The Timaru Herald'' and '' The Christchurch Press''. Evans still produces political cartoons for the ''Northland Age'' and still produces his ''Edna'' character, the ubiquitous farmer's wife, which has been running fortnightly since 1976 in New Zealand's largest farming newspaper ''Rural News''. Evan's also has a focus on Israel, its government and politicians, also publishes anti-Semitic and anti-Israel cartoons. Gordon Minhinnick
Sir Gordon Edward George Minhinnick (13 June 1902 – 19 February 1992) was a New Zealand cartoonist. He was born at Torpoint, Cornwall, England, educated at Kelly College, Devon, and left for New Zealand in 1921 where he studied architecture for four years. In 1926 he joined the ''New Zealand Free Lance'' as cartoonist, but soon transferred to the ''Christchurch Sun'' and thence to the ''Auckland Sun''. He joined the '' New Zealand Herald'' as a political cartoonist in 1930 and although he officially retired in 1976, contributed cartoons to the newspaper for more than another decade. In the 1950 King's Birthday Honours, Minhinnick was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, and in the 1976 Queen's Birthday Honours he was promoted to Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire), for services as a cartoonist.
