NASL Final 1972
The 1972 NASL Final was the championship match of the 1972 season, between the New York Cosmos and the St. Louis Stars. The match was played on August 26, 1972 at Hofstra Stadium, in Hempstead, New York. The New York Cosmos won the match, 2–1, and were crowned the 1972 NASL champions. Background St. Louis Stars The St. Louis Stars qualified for the playoffs by winning the Southern Division with 69 points. This guaranteed them at least one home playoff game. They defeated the 1970 champions, the Rochester Lancers, 2–0, in a semifinal game played on August 15, 1972 to advance to the final. New York Cosmos The New York Cosmos qualified for the playoffs by winning the Northern Division with 77 points. They also had the highest point-total in the NASL, and therefore were guaranteed home field throughout the playoffs. Werner Roth (soccer)
Werner Roth (born April 4, 1948) is an American former professional soccer defender. Mainly associated with the New York Cosmos, he also represented the United States men's national soccer team for three years. He is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Soccer career Born in Yugoslavia, Roth emigrated to the United States at age eight, going on to become a rising star in American soccer through the 1960s. He attended Brooklyn Technical High School, playing on the varsity squad from 1962 to 1966, and captaining the team in his senior year. Additionally, he studied architecture at the Pratt Institute, and played for the German-Hungarians in the German American Soccer League. One of the few Americans on a star-studded New York Cosmos side (i.e. Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer), Roth played with the club seven years, and helped it to Soccer Bowl titles in 1972, 1977 and 1978. Everald Cummings
Everald "Gally" Cummings (born 28 August 1948 in Trinidad and Tobago) is a former football midfielder who played for six years in the North American Soccer League. He also played professionally in Mexico. He was a mainstay of the Trinidad and Tobago national team in the 1960s and 1970s and later became the national team coach of Trinidad and Tobago in the 1980s during the ''Strike Squad'' years. Wilberforce "Willie" Mfum is a retired Ghanaian football (soccer) forward who played professionally in Ghana and the United States. He was a member of the Ghanaian Olympic soccer team at the 1964 Summer Olympics. Club career Mfum played for Asante Kotoko in his native Ghana. Siegfried Stritzl (April 12, 1944 – November 3, 2022) was an American soccer player who was the 1969 North American Soccer League Rookie of the Year. He also earned eleven caps, scoring two goals, with the U.S. national team between 1968 and 1973. The Sigi Stritzl Award, given to exceptional high school and college students, is named in his honor. Professional career Stritzl was born in Yugoslavia. He spent six seasons with Blau-Weiss Gottschee of the German American Soccer League (GASL) between 1961 and 1968. Barry Mahy
Barry Mahy (21 January 1942 – 1 October 2020) was an English-American association football defender. He began his career with Scunthorpe United and finished it with the New York Cosmos. He also earned four caps with the U.S. national team in 1973. Club career While born in Doncaster, Mahy grew up on the island of Guernsey, a British crown dependency. He began his playing career with the Islanders, a non-FIFA affiliated "national" team. In 1963, Dick Duckworth, manager of English Second Division club Scunthorpe United signed Mahy. At the time Scunthorpe was performing poorly and Duckworth was attempting to rebuild the roster mid-season.
