Nye (play)
''Nye'' is a play by Tim Price about the life of Aneurin 'Nye' Bevan, founder of the National Health Service. Production history The play made its world premiere in the Olivier Theatre at the National Theatre, London beginning previews from 24 February (with a press night of 6 March) running until 11 May 2024, starring Michael Sheen in the title role and directed by Rufus Norris. It was a co-production with Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff where it transferred from 18 May to 1 June. As part of Norris' final season announcement as director of the National Theatre, it was announced that the play will be revived with Sheen reprising the role of Nye in the Olivier Theatre beginning previews from 3 July (with a press night on 10 July) to 16 August 2025, before transferring again to the Wales Millennium Centre from 22 to 30 August. Tim Price (writer)
Tim Price is a Welsh screenwriter and playwright. He created the Welsh crime drama ''Y Pris'', which ran for two series on S4C, and the fantasy series ''Switch''. Career Price worked as a journalist and designer on weekly newspapers, like the ''Pontypridd Observer''. Price's stage plays include ''Salt, Root and Roe'' (nominated for an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an affiliate theatre), about two sisters who make a suicide pact, ''I'm With the Band'', about an indie band, and his commission for the second season of the National Theatre Wales tour, ''The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning'' (winner of the James Tait Black Award best play). Aneurin Bevan
Aneurin "Nye" Bevan Privy Council (United Kingdom), PC (; 15 November 1897 – 6 July 1960) was a Welsh Labour Party (UK), Labour Party politician, noted for spearheading the creation of the British National Health Service during his tenure as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Minister of Health in Clement Attlee's government. He is also known for his wider contribution to the founding of the British welfare state. He was first elected as Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), MP for Ebbw Vale (UK Parliament constituency), Ebbw Vale in 1929, and used his Parliamentary platform to make a number of influential criticisms of Winston Churchill and his government during the Second World War. Rufus Norris
Sir Rufus John Norris (born 16 January 1965) is a British theatre and film director, who was the artistic director and chief executive of the National Theatre from 2015 to 2025. He received the Society of London Theatre Special Award in 2025 for his services to theatre. Life and career Norris grew up in Africa and Malaysia, attended North Bromsgrove High School and Kidderminster College of Further Education, and later trained as an actor at RADA before turning to directing. National Theatre Live
National Theatre Live is an initiative operated by the Royal National Theatre in London. It broadcasts live, by satellite, performances of their productions (and those of other theatres) to cinemas and arts centres around the world. About I grew up in Manchester in the 60s. If I had been able to see Olivier's National Theatre at my local cinema, I would have gone all of the time. :— Nicholas Hytner, director of the Royal National Theatre. The programme began its pilot season in June 2009 with a production of '' Phèdre'', starring Helen Mirren, which screened live in 70 cinemas across the UK. Two hundred more venues eventually showed the production internationally, resulting in a combined audience of around 50,000 people for this one performance.
