Norm Bangerter
Norman Howard Bangerter (January 4, 1933 – April 14, 2015) was an American politician and businessman who served as the List of Governors of Utah, 13th governor of Utah from 1985 to 1993. He was the first Republican Party (United States), Republican elected to the position since 1960, and the first to hold the office since 1965. Early life Bangerter was born in Granger, Utah (now West Valley City) to William Henry Bangerter and Isabelle Bawden. His older brother, William Grant Bangerter, served as a General Authority of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Career Prior to his election, Bangerter founded a successful construction firm which specialized in building homes. The governor of Utah is the head of government of UtahUT Const. art. VII, § 5 and the commander-in-chief of its Utah National Guard, military forces. The governor has a duty to enforce state laws as well as the power to either approve or veto bills passed by the Utah State Legislature, Utah Legislature. 1988 Utah Gubernatorial Election
The 1988 Utah gubernatorial election was held on November 8, 1988. Republican nominee and incumbent governor Norman H. Bangerter defeated Democratic nominee Ted Wilson and independent Merrill Cook with 40.13% of the vote. As of 2023, this is the closest a Democrat has come to winning the governorship in Utah since Scott M. Matheson left office in 1985. Background Governor Bangerter consistently trailed in the polls behind Democrat Ted Wilson until near election day. This was due to his unpopular tax increases that spawned a protest movement against his policies, resulting in three tax ballot measures installed, and independent candidate Merrill Cook championing in support of them. Bangerter justified the increases due to the regional recession in Utah caused by declining energy commodity prices in 1986 to 1987, which caused mining employment to fall by 60%, and construction by 30%. The 1984 Utah gubernatorial election was held on November 6, 1984. Republican nominee Norman H. Bangerter defeated Democratic nominee Wayne Owens with 55.87% of the vote, becoming Utah's first Republican governor in 20 years. Background Up until 1984, the Democratic Party had held the Utah Governors seat for twenty years since Cal Rampton first won in 1964. Popular Democratic Governor Scott Matheson declined to seek a third time, allowing for an open democratic primary, in which former congressman Wayne Owens won. Kem Gardner, the chairman of the State Board of Regents, a wealthy real estate developer, and Owen's main opponent in the primary, routinely attacked Owens as being too liberal, a label Owens denied. William Robert Wright
William Robert Wright (May 20, 1935 – January 13, 2012) was an American attorney, political candidate, and author. Early life and education Wright was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Ralph Bassett Wright and Afton Middlemiss Wright. He graduated from East High School in 1953, and then served in the Swiss Austrian Mission of the LDS Church from 1955 to 1958. Returning home to the University of Utah, he was elected student body vice president and received a Bachelor of Science in Geology in 1960, and a J.D. in 1963. Career Wright worked at the firm Jones, Waldo, Holbrook & McDonough in Salt Lake City for 29 years.. He later become a partner at Arent Fox in Washington, D.C., and then at Bryan Cave in Salt Lake City. From 1977 to 1979, Wright was Chairman of the Utah Republican Party.
