In formal syntax, a node is a point in a Parse tree, tree diagram or Concrete syntax tree, syntactic tree that can be assigned a syntactic category label. A formal grammar is a set of symbols and the production rules for rewriting some of them into every possible string of a formal language over an alphabet. In linguistics, X-bar theory is a model of phrase structure and a theory of syntactic category formation that proposes a universal schema for how phrases are organized. It suggests that all phrases share a common underlying structure, regardless of their specific category (noun phrase, verb phrase, etc.). Merge is one of the basic operations in the Minimalist Program, a leading approach to generative syntax, when two syntactic objects are combined to form a new syntactic unit (a Set (mathematics), set).
