Nitirat Group
The Nitirat Group () was a progressive group of Thammasat University law faculty formed in March 2011, led by Worachet Pakeerut and Piyabutr Saengkanokkul. The group aimed to amend Section 112 of Thai Criminal Code ( Thailand's ''lèse-majesté'' law) and nullify the legal impacts of the 2006 Thai coup d'état. 2012 Thammasat University ban On 30 January 2012, Thammasat University banned the use of its facilities to campaign against the ''lèse-majesté'' law, effectively banning the Nitirat Group's activities on campus. Thammasat University rector Somkit Lertpaithoon defended the ban, believing continued activities would lead to conflict and chaos. Thammasat University
Thammasat University (TU; ; , ) is a public university, public research university in Thailand with campuses in the Tha Phra Chan area of Bangkok, Rangsit, Pattaya and Lampang Province. , Thammasat University has over 39,000 students enrolled in 33 faculties, colleges, institutes and 2,000 academic staff. Worachet Pakeerut
Worachet Pakeerut (, , ; born 8 August 1969) is a Thai legal scholar specialising in constitutional and administrative law and a professor at the Faculty of Law, Thammasat University. Education Worachet was born in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, where his father was a railway station master. He completed high school at the prestigious Triam Udom Suksa School in Bangkok before studying law at Thammasat University from which he graduated with an honours degree. In 1988, he served as deputy president of his university's student council. The Thai Bar Association admitted him to the bar in 1992. He continued his studies at the University of Göttingen in Germany, completing the Magister Juris programme in 1994 with a thesis about the ''clausula rebus sic stantibus'' in administrative contract law. Piyabutr Saengkanokkul
Piyabutr Saengkanokkul (, , , born 23 October 1979) is a Thai academic, associate professor, left-wing activist, former politician, and Secretary-General of the Progressive Movement, a socio-political group. He served as a member of the Thai House of Representatives and was the first and only Secretary-General for the Future Forward Party, which he co-founded in 2018. Prior to his political career, Piyabutr was an associate professor at the Faculty of Law, Thammasat University. He has worked as a constitutional law professor for more than 16 years. In Thailand, ''lèse-majesté'' is a crime according to Section 112 of the Thai Criminal Code, which makes it illegal to defamation, defame, Insult (legal), insult, or threat, threaten the king of Thailand, the queen of Thailand, the heir to the throne of Thailand, or the regent of Thailand. Modern Thai ''lèse-majesté'' law has been on the statute books since 1908. Thailand is the only constitutional monarchy to have strengthened its ''lèse-majesté'' law since the Second World War. Somkit Lertpaithoon () is a Thai academic administrator who served as rector of Thammasat University from 2010 to 2017. Military ties Following the 2006 Thai coup d'état, Somkit served on the as a member of the 2007 constitution drafting committee. Pathum Thani Province
Pathum Thani (, ) is one of the central provinces (''changwat'') of Thailand. Neighboring provinces are (from north clockwise): Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Saraburi, Nakhon Nayok, Chachoengsao, Bangkok, and Nonthaburi. The province is north of Bangkok and is part of the Bangkok metropolitan area. The Future Forward Party (FFP; , ; otherwise known as 'New Future Party') was a social democratic and progressive List of political parties in Thailand, Thai political party from March 2018 to February 2020. Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit (, ; born 25 November 1978) is a Thai businessman, politician, and activist who served as the leader of the Future Forward Party from 2018 to 2020.
