Nick Kent
Nick Kent (born 24 December 1951) is a British rock critic and musician, best known for his writing for the ''NME'' in the 1970s, and his books ''The Dark Stuff'' (1994) and ''Apathy for the Devil'' (2010). Early life Kent, the son of a former Abbey Road Studios sound engineer, began his career as a writer at age 21 in 1972, inspired by Jack Kerouac and Hunter S. Thompson. Kent's writing talent was evident at college when, after analysing James Joyce's '' Ulysses'', he was recommended to apply for further English study. But after dropping out of two universities he started to make a name for himself as a music critic in London's underground music scene. Career Along with his contemporaries, such as Paul Morley, Charles Shaar Murray, Paul Rambali and Danny Baker, Kent is widely considered one of the most important and influential UK music journalists of the 1970s. Punk rock (also known as simply punk) is a rock music genre that emerged in the mid-1970s. The Damned (band)
The Damned are an English rock band formed in London in 1976 by lead vocalist Dave Vanian, guitarist Brian James, bassist (and later guitarist) Captain Sensible and drummer Rat Scabies. They were the first punk band from the United Kingdom to release a single, " New Rose" (1976), release a studio album, '' Damned Damned Damned'' (1977) and tour the United States. Nine of the band's singles charted on the UK Singles Chart Top 40. The band briefly dissolved after '' Music for Pleasure'' (1977), the follow-up to their debut studio album, was critically dismissed. They quickly reformed without Brian James and released '' Machine Gun Etiquette'' (1979). Brian James (guitarist)
Brian James (born Brian Robertson, 18 February 1951 – 6 March 2025) was an English punk rock guitarist, who was a founding member of the Damned as well as of the Lords of the New Church. Life and career James was born in Hammersmith, London on 18 February 1951. He began his musical career in 1973 by forming garage rock outfit Bastard, which James eventually decamped to Belgium to get gigs as there were few bookings in the UK on account of the band’s name. James went on to play in proto-punk group London SS, alongside Mick Jones, later of The Clash. James then co-founded The Damned, writing almost all the material on their first two albums ('' Damned Damned Damned'' and '' Music for Pleasure'') before leaving at the end of 1977. London SS are a British rock group founded in March 1975 by drummer Geir Waade, bassist John Brown, guitarist Mick Jones, and guitarist Eunan Brady (formerly of the Hollywood Brats). They later became associated with the then new punk rock scene when the Sex Pistols broke in early 1976.
