Nhanulepisosteus
''Nhanulepisosteus'' (''nhanu'', Mixteca for "old" + ''Lepisosteus'') is an extinct genus of gar known from the Late Jurassic of Oaxaca, Mexico. It contains a single species, ''N. mexicanus''. It is the oldest species of true gar known from fossil remains. ''Nhanulepisosteus'' is known from disarticulated cranial remains and ganoid scales from the Kimmeridgian-aged Llano Yosobé deposits of the Sabinal Formation. Although retaining some traits of basal Ginglymodi, it has certain derived features such as jaw structure that more closely resemble modern gar, indicating that gar are a highly morphologically conservative group. ''Nhanulepisosteus'' inhabited a fully marine environment, contrasting with modern gar that are largely freshwater taxa, with only occasional sightings in marine environments. Lepisosteidae
Gars are an ancient group of ray-finned fish in the Family (biology), family Lepisosteidae. They comprise seven living species of fish in two genera that inhabit Fresh water, fresh, Brackish water, brackish, and occasionally marine waters of eastern North America, Central America and Cuba in the Caribbean, though extinct members of the family were more widespread. They are the only surviving members of the Ginglymodi, a clade of fish which first appeared during the Triassic period, over 240 million years ago, and are one of only two surviving groups of holosteian fish, alongside the bowfins, which have a similar distribution. Gars have elongated bodies that are heavily armored with ganoid scales, and fronted by similarly elongated jaws filled with long, sharp teeth. Sabinal Formation
The Sabinal Formation is a Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous-aged geological formation in Oaxaca, Mexico. It preserves a highly diverse marine fauna. It was initially thought to only encompass the Late Jurassic (Kimmeridgian & Tithonian), but more recent studies have redefined it to cover the earliest Cretaceous (Berriasian & Valanginian) as well. It is part of the Tlaxiaco Basin, a prominent structural basin in southern Mexico that accumulated both continental and marine sediments between the Early Jurassic and the Paleogene. Ginglymodi is a clade of ray-finned fish containing modern-day gars (Lepisosteidae) and their extinct relatives (including the family (biology), family Lepidotidae) in the Order (biology), order Lepisosteiformes, the extinct orders Semionotiformes and Kyphosichthyiformes, and various other extinct taxa. Ginglymodi is one of the two major subgroups of the infraclass Holostei, the other one being Halecomorphi, which contains the bowfin and eyespot bowfin and their fossil relatives. In the geologic timescale, the Kimmeridgian is an age in the Late Jurassic Epoch and a stage in the Upper Jurassic Series. It spans the time between 154.8 ±0.8 Ma and 149.2 ±0.7 Ma (million years ago). The Kimmeridgian follows the Oxfordian and precedes the Tithonian.
