Neustadt–Wissembourg Railway
The Neustadt–Wissembourg railway, also called the ''Pfälzische Maximiliansbahn'' ("Palatine Maximilian Railway"), ''Maximiliansbahn'' or just the ''Maxbahn'' - is a railway line in southwestern Germany that runs from Neustadt an der Weinstrasse to Wissembourg (German: ''Weißenburg'') in Alsace, France. The Palatine Maximilian Railway also included a branch (the Winden–Karlsruhe railway) from Winden via Wörth and the '' Maxaubahn'' to Karlsruhe. Overview It was named by the ''Palatine Maximilian Railway Company'', who had built the line, in honour of the reigning King of Bavaria at that time, King Maximilian II. Built as a transit route, the line acted as part of a long-distance, north–south, trunk route for the first few decades. It lost this important role completely in 1930, whilst the Winden−Karlsruhe section, originally built as a branch, experienced an upturn, as a consequence of which the Winden−Wissembourg section in particular was sidelined. Landau–Rohrbach Railway
The Landau–Rohrbach railway (sometimes called the Südpfalzbahn—"South Palatinate Railway"—or the Queichtalbahn—"Queich Valley Railway") is a major line running from Landau in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate to Rohrbach in the Saarland. The main section between Landau and Zweibrücken was opened on 25 November 1875 after the first sections had already been opened between 1857 and 1867. Although the Landau–Rohrbach railway was once a major east–west route for freight and was used for long-distance transport, the line is now used exclusively for regional passenger services. Marketing names The alternate name of ''Queichtalbahn'' takes its name from the Queich river, which the line follows from Landau to Hauenstein. Otterbach (Rhine)
The Otterbach is a stream, 42 kilometres long, in South Palatinate in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, that flows eastwards and northeastwards towards the Upper Rhine. Course The Otterbach rises in the area of the Upper Mundat Forest in the southeast of the Palatine Forest. Its source lies at a height of about 300 metres on the hillside east of Guttenberg Castle (Palatinate), Guttenberg Castle between the Hohe Derst (561 m high, to the north) and the Hoher Kopf (Schweigen-Rechtenbach), Hoher Kopf (497 m high, to the south). After breaking out of the low mountain range into the Upper Rhine Valley, the Otterbach flows through the two villages named after it, Oberotterbach and Niederotterbach, then through Vollmersweiler and Freckenfeld, where it passes the northern edge of the Bienwald woods. Winden–Karlsruhe Railway
The Winden–Karlsruhe railway is a mainline railway in the German states of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, which in its present form has existed since 1938 and is electrified between Wörth and Karlsruhe. The current Winden–Wörth section was opened in 1864. A year later, the gap between the Rhine and the Maxau Railway (''Maxaubahn''), which had been opened in 1862, was closed. The route of the latter was changed during the relocation of the Karlsruhe Hauptbahnhof. New sections of the line were also built between Wörth and Mühlburg mainly in connection with the commissioning of a fixed bridge over the Rhine. The latter work significantly increased its importance. Today the route is operated together with the Neustadt–Winden section of the Neustadt–Wissembourg railway as timetable route 676. Winden (Pfalz) Station
Winden station is in the town of Winden in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate and is its public transport node. At the station, the line to Wissembourg in Alsace branches off the Palatine Maximilian Railway (''Pfälzische Maximiliansbahn''), which runs from Neustadt an der Weinstraße to Karlsruhe. In addition, the ''Kurbadlinie'' ("Spa Line") branches off at the station to Bad Bergzabern. It is located at the eastern edge of the town. It is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 4 station. The Erlenbach is a 34.2 km long, left tributary of the Michelsbach in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Course The Erlenbach rises in the South Palatine Wasgau region, the southern part of the Palatine Forest, in the municipality of Birkenhördt.
