Necmiye Alpay
Necmiye Alpay (born 23 November 1946 Sındırgı) is a Turkish linguist and translator. She has devoted much of her efforts to improve the quality of written Turkish. She has written columns and articles in many newspapers and journals such as Radikal daily, translated many works into Turkish and also published books on the usage of language, literary criticism, and the peace process in Turkey. Early life and education Alpay was born in Sındırgı, Turkey on 23 November 1946. After receiving her BSc degree from Ankara University and obtained a Ph.D. from the Paris Nanterre University in the field of international economics. She was lecturer at Ankara University, Faculty of Political Science for a short time until she was sentenced 3 years jail time following the military coup of 12 September 1980. Sındırgı, formerly Koruköy and Carseae (), is a municipality and district of Balıkesir Province, Turkey. Its area is 1,387 km2, and its population is 32,408 (2022). The mayor is Serkan Sak ( CHP). A carpet festival is held in Sındırgı town in every fall season around September, and it is called International Yağcıbedir Festival. The Anti-Terror Law of Turkey (ATL), Anti-Terror Act of Turkey (ATA) or ''Terörle Mücadele Yasası'' (TMY) in Turkish, is a nation-wide law in Turkey that was written in 1991 to strongly criminalize acts of terrorism. Background The ATA was passed in 1991 during the Gulf War alongside the declaration of martial law in the country. In part, it was created as a response to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a militant political party in favor of a separate Kurdistan and autonomy for Kurds in Turkey. In 1984, the group began organizing in support of Kurds in the Kurdish-Turkish conflict. The PKK established its base of operations in Northern Iraq, close to Southeastern Turkey in 1991. ''Özgür Gündem'' (Turkish language, Turkish for "Free Agenda") was an Istanbul-based daily Turkish language newspaper, mainly read by Kurds. Launched in May 1992, the newspaper was known for its extensive reporting on the Kurdish-Turkish conflict, and was regularly accused of making propaganda for the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). Its editors and staff have frequently been arrested and prosecuted, which resulted in multiple publication bans. Since April 1994, the publication continued under different names until ''Özgür Gündem'' was relaunched in 2011.
