National Library Symbol
The National Library Symbol is a pictogram indicating the location of a library. It features a white silhouette of a book and a reader on a blue background (originally specified Pantone PMS #285). It was adopted by the American Library Association in 1982 to raise awareness of services provided by libraries and to convey a more "modern" image. History The 1979 White House Conference on Library and Information Services recommended the adoption of a national library symbol to increase public awareness of libraries. In 1981, American Library Association President Elizabeth W. Stone established a task force, headed by Dorothy Pollet Gray of the Library Congress, to select a symbol. After examining international examples of library symbols, the task force selected a symbol designed by Ralph E. DeVore for the Western Maryland Public Libraries in 1978. A pictogram (also pictogramme, pictograph, or simply picto) is a graphical symbol that conveys meaning through its visual resemblance to a physical object. Pictograms are used in systems of writing and visual communication. A pictography is a writing system which uses pictograms. Some pictograms, such as GHS hazard pictograms, hazard pictograms, may be elements of formal languages. In the field of prehistoric art, the term "pictograph" has a different definition, and specifically refers to art painted on rock surfaces. Pantone LLC (stylized as PANTONE) is an American limited liability company headquartered in Carlstadt, New Jersey, and best known for its Pantone Matching System (PMS), a proprietary color order system used in a variety of industries, notably graphic design, fashion design, product design, printing, and manufacturing and supporting the management of color from design to production, in physical and digital formats, among coated and uncoated materials, cotton, polyester, nylon and plastics. National Commission On Libraries And Information Science
The National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS) was an agency in the United States government between 1970 and 2008. The activities of the Commission were consolidated into the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Records of NCLIS are held at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration and the University of Michigan Library, Special Collections as part of the Power Collection for the Study of Scholarly Communication and Information Transfer.
