N11 Code
An N11 code (pronounced ''Enn-one-one'') is a three-digit dialing code used in abbreviated dialing in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). The mnemonic ''N'' stands for the digits ''2'' through ''9'' and thus the syntax stands for the codes ''211'', ''311'', ''411'', ''511'', ''611'', ''711'', ''811'', and ''911''. These dialing codes provide access to special local services, such as ''911'' for emergency services, which is a facility mandated by law in the United States. The (FCC) in CC Docket 92-105, specified how the N11 codes of 211, 311, 511, 711 and 811 codes would be used for various types of public information under NANP. The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) is an integrated telephone numbering plan for twenty-five regions in twenty countries, primarily in North America and the Caribbean. This group is historically known as World Numbering Zone 1 and has the country code ''1''. Some North American countries, most notably Mexico, do not participate in the NANP. The concepts of the NANP were devised originally during the 1940s by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) for the Bell System and the independent telephone companies in North America in Operator Toll Dialing.
