Myriam Merlet
Myriam Merlet (October 14, 1956 – January 12, 2010) was a political activist, scholar and economist who served as Chief of Staff of Haiti's Ministry for Gender and the Rights of Women (Ministère a la Condition Feminine et aux Droits des Femmes (MCFDF)), from 2006 to 2008. One of the particular focuses of her work was on how rape and rape culture is used as a political weapon, and was not considered a criminal offense in Haiti until 2005. Early life Merlet was born in Les Cayes, Haiti. Merlet was the second youngest of six siblings: an older brother and four sisters. In the 1970s, Merlet left Haiti, growing up in France and Italy. In 1975, Merlet moved to Montreal, Canada, where she lived for eleven years. In 1985, while living abroad, she received her M. Sc. in Economics from University of Quebec at Montreal. Les Cayes
Les Cayes ( , ), often referred to as Aux Cayes (; ht, Okay), is a commune and seaport in the Les Cayes Arrondissement, in the Sud department of Haiti, with a population of 71,236. Due to its isolation from the political turmoil of the capital, Port-au-Prince, it is one of Haiti's major ports, with export trade concentrating on mostly coffee and sugarcane. As the world's largest supplier of vetiver, it exports 250 tons annually of this ingredient of perfume and fragrance manufacturing. Minor exports include bananas and timber. Women in Haiti have equal constitutional rights as men in the economic, political, cultural and social fields, as well as in the family. 2010 Haiti Earthquake
A catastrophic magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake struck Haiti at 16:53 local time (21:53 UTC) on Tuesday, 12 January 2010. The epicenter was near the town of Léogâne, Ouest department, approximately west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital. By 24 January, at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been recorded. An estimated three million people were affected by the quake. Death toll estimates range from 100,000 to about 160,000 to Haitian government figures from 220,000 to 316,000, although these latter figures are a matter of some dispute. The government of Haiti estimated that 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings had collapsed or were severely damaged. Ann Valérie Timothée Milfort (, born 1973 in Belgium), is the cabinet chief of staff of Haiti. She is the current president of Haitian Tèt Kale Party, Parti Haïtien Tèt Kale (PHTK). Early life and education Former student of Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny, Milfort has a degree in social sciences and mathematics from collège Jean-de-Brébeuf in Montréal during 1991 and 1992. She entered Université de Montréal in 1992, earning a bachelor's degree in economics in 1996. She earned a master's degree from Florida International University in 1997 and a gender and human rights master's degree from Rutgers University, Edward J. Bloustein School of Public Policy and Urban Planning in 2005.
