Mr Dick
Mr. Dick, whose full name is Richard Babley, is a character in the Charles Dickens novel ''David Copperfield'' and its many adaptions. His main role in the story is as a wise fool – amiable and innocent but also perceptive and effective. Mr. Dick has eccentric traits and an obsession with work on his memorial from which he is constantly distracted by thoughts of King Charles' head. He takes his name partly from an acquaintance of Dickens – Captain Samuel Dick, RN. But the name Dick also alludes to Dickens himself, as does the pre-occupation with Charles. Mr. Dick's difficult work on his memorial mirrors Dickens' conflicted role as the author of the novel, which was autobiographical, drawing on Dickens' own traumatic childhood. John Forster (biographer)
John Forster (2 April 1812 – 2 February 1876) was an important Victorian English biographer and literary critic. Life Forster was born at Newcastle upon Tyne. His father, who was a Unitarian of a Northumberland family, was a cattle-dealer. John Forster was educated in classics and in mathematics at The Royal Grammar School. Forster in 1828 matriculated at the University of Cambridge, but after only a month's residence there he moved to London, where he attended classes at University College London, and entered the Inner Temple. In London, Forster successfully contributed to ''The True Sun'', ''The Morning Chronicle'' and '' The Examiner'', for which he was literary and dramatic critic. Delbert Mann
Delbert Martin Mann Jr. (January 30, 1920 – November 11, 2007) was an American television and film director. He won the Academy Award for Best Director for the film '' Marty'' (1955), adapted from a 1953 teleplay of the same name which he had also directed. From 1967 to 1971, he was president of the Directors Guild of America. In 2002, he received the DGA's honorary life member award. Mann was credited to have "helped bring TV techniques to the film world." Emlyn Williams
George Emlyn Williams, CBE (26 November 1905 – 25 September 1987) was a Welsh writer, dramatist and actor. Early life Williams was born into a Welsh-speaking, working class family at 1 Jones Terrace, Pen-y-ffordd, Ffynnongroyw, Flintshire. He was the eldest of the three surviving sons of Mary (née Williams) a former maid-servant and Richard Williams, a greengrocer. He spoke only Welsh until the age of eight. Later he said he would probably have begun working in the mines at age 12 if he had not caught the attention of Sarah Grace Cooke, the model for Miss Moffat in ''The Corn Is Green''. ''David Copperfield'' is a BBC television serial starring Ian McKellen in the title role of the adaptation of Charles Dickens's 1850 novel that began airing in January 1966. It also featured Tina Packer as Dora Flora Robson as Betsey Trotwood, Gordon Gostelow as Barkis, and Christopher Guard as young David. The screenplay adaptation was written by Vincent Tilsley, who had previously helmed the 1956 adaptation almost a decade prior. It had a viewership of over 12 million for its initial airings. Only four of the serial's thirteen episodes (3, 8, 9 and 11) are known to exist. George Benson (actor)
George Frederick Percy Benson (11 January 1911 – 17 June 1983) was a British actor of both theatre and screen, whose career stretched from the 1930s to the early 1970s. He was on stage from the late 1920s, and made his film debut in 1932 in '' Holiday Lovers'' written by Leslie Arliss. Richard Goolden
Richard Percy Herbert Goolden, OBE (23 February 1895 – 18 June 1981) was a British actor, most famous for his portrayal of Mole from Kenneth Grahame's ''Wind in the Willows'' in A A Milne's stage adaptation, ''Toad of Toad Hall''. Goolden took up the stage after serving in the army in the First World War. From the start of his career he was cast in character parts, usually elderly. ''David Copperfield'' is a 1935 American film released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer based upon Charles Dickens' 1850 novel ''The Personal History, Adventures, Experience, & Observation of David Copperfield the Younger'' (though a number of characters and incidents from the novel were omitted). The story was adapted by Hugh Walpole from the Dickens novel, and the film was directed by George Cukor from a screenplay by Howard Estabrook and Lenore J. Coffee, who was not credited. The novel was adapted for three silent film versions prior to this, the first sound production. George Cukor
George Dewey Cukor (; July 7, 1899 – January 24, 1983) was an American film director and film producer. He mainly concentrated on comedies and literary adaptations. His career flourished at RKO when David O. Selznick, the studio's Head of Production, assigned Cukor to direct several of RKO's major films, including ''What Price Hollywood?'' Lennox Pawle
Lennox Pawle (27 April 1872, in Marylebone, Middlesex – 22 February 1936, in Los Angeles, California) was an English stage and film actor. Life and career John Lennox Pawle was born in Marylebone, London, on 27 April 1872, the son of John Christopher Pawle, a London solicitor, and his wife, Maria. Before becoming an actor Pawle worked as a newspaper reporter; later he began his acting career at Sarah Thorne’s Dramatic School.
