Moviyana Film Society
The Moviyana Film Society ( bn, ম্যুভিয়ানা ফিল্ম সোসাইটি) is one of the largest film culture oriented organisations in Bangladesh. It was established on 10 November 2006. It regularly arranges Film Screenings, Film Festivals, Film Appreciation course and other Film making related courses in different cities of Bangladesh. Film maker & Writer Belayat Hossain Mamun is the founder and incumbent president of this organization. Moviyana Film Society is affiliated to the Federation of Film Societies of Bangladesh (FFSB). Activities Moviyana Film Society also arranged a four-month long workshop on Digital Film Making with Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy from April, 2012. In 2013, Moviyana Film Society organised a 6-day “Film Festival of Women Filmmakers in Bangladesh” at the National Art Gallery Auditorium, featuring 31 films, all by Bangladeshi women directors. Film Society
A film society is a membership-based club where people can watch screenings of films which would otherwise not be shown in mainstream cinemas. In Spain, Ireland and Italy, they are known as "cineclubs", and in Germany they are known as "filmclubs". They usually have an educational aim, introducing new audiences to different audiovisual works through an organized and prepared program of screenings. Editorial output reinforces the work of these organisations, as they produce hand-programmes, brochures, schedules, information sheets, and even essays, supporting the significance of their exhibitions. Federation of Film Societies of Bangladesh (FFSB) is the umbrella organization of film societies in Bangladesh. FFSB commenced its journey on October 24 in 1973 as a federation for all film societies functioning in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy ( bn, শিল্পকলা একাডেমি; National Academy of Fine and Performing Arts) is the principal state-sponsored national cultural center of Bangladesh. History It is the national academy of fine and performing arts. The academy was established through an act of Parliament in 1974 as a statutory organization under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. But subsequently the Act of 1974 of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy was amended through a new act of Parliament in 1989. The academy is headed by a Director General. The overall direction for the functioning of the academy is provided by an Executive Council (Shilpakala Academy Parishad) headed by the Minister in charge of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. Dolly Anwar
Dolly Anwar (; 1 July 1948 – 3 July 1991) was a Bangladeshi stage, television and film actress and writer and editor of ''Saatdin'' magazine. She was awarded Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in the film ''Surjo Dighol Bari'' (1979). Early life Anwar was the daughter of Nilima Ibrahim, a political and feminist activist, and Muhammad Ibrahim, a physician. She was an undergraduate student in literature at Jagannath College. Career Anwar began her career on stage at the age of 13. At 16, she acted in ''Aktala Dotala'' by Munier Choudhury and ''Roj Roj'' the first play and the first drama serial respectively on Bangladesh Television. Tareque Masud
Tareque Masud (6 December 1956 – 13 August 2011) was a Cinema of Bangladesh, Bangladeshi independent film director, film producer, screenwriter and lyricist. He first found success with the films ''Muktir Gaan'' (1995) and ''Matir Moina'' (2002), for which he won three international awards, including the International Critics' FIPRESCI Prize, in the Directors' Fortnight at 2002 Cannes Film Festival. The film became List of Bangladeshi submissions for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Bangladesh's first film to compete for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Masud died in a road accident on 13 August 2011 while returning to Dhaka from Manikganj on the Dhaka-Aricha highway after visiting a filming location. Catherine Masud
Catherine Masud ( bn, ক্যাথরিন মাসুদ) is an American-born filmmaker, residing in Bangladesh from 1995–2015. She now lives in the United States. She has collaborated with her husband & filmmaking partner Tareque Masud to make numerous shorts, documentaries and features, many of which have been nationally/internationally awarded and shown around the world. Since Tareque's untimely death in August 2011, Catherine has devoted herself to the archiving and preservation of his work, and the completion of their unfinished oeuvre. Professional life A graduate of Brown University, she also studied fine arts at the Art Institute of Chicago, and film production in New York. Badal Rahman
Badal Rahman (June 4, 1949June 11, 2010 ) was a Freedom Fighter of Bangladesh Liberation War 1971, Bangladeshi film director, Film Society Activist, Writer & Cultural Personality. In 1980 he became the first director to create a full-length feature film for children in Bangladesh, ''Emiler Goenda Bahini''. The film was an adoption of Erich Kästner's novel ''Emil und die Detektive'' published in 1929. Biography Rahman completed his diploma in film editing from the Film and Television Institute of India. In 1974, he, along with Syed Salahuddin Zaki made his first film, ''Prottashar Shurjo''. After directing ''Emiler Goenda Bahini'', he made two more children's films - ''Kanthal Burir Bagan'' and ''Chhana O Muktijuddha'', both films funded by Bangladesh Shishu Academy. Ernst Ingmar Bergman (14 July 1918 – 30 July 2007) was a Swedish film director, screenwriter, producer and playwright. Mrinal Sen
Mrinal Sen (''Beng.'' মৃণাল সেন; 14 May 1923 – 30 December 2018) was an Indian film director, and screenwriter known for his work primarily in Bengali, and few Hindi and Telugu language films. Regarded as one of the finest Indian filmmakers, along with his contemporaries Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, and Tapan Sinha, Sen played major role in the New Wave cinema of eastern India. Sen has received various national and international honors including eighteen Indian National Film Awards. André Bazin
André Bazin (; 18 April 1918 – 11 November 1958) was a renowned and influential French film critic and film theorist. Bazin started to write about film in 1943 and was a co-founder of the renowned film magazine ''Cahiers du cinéma'' in 1951, with Jacques Doniol-Valcroze and Joseph-Marie Lo Duca. He is notable for arguing that realism is the most important function of cinema. His call for objective reality, deep focus, and lack of montage are linked to his belief that the interpretation of a film or scene should be left to the spectator.
