Movement For United Georgia
The Movement for United Georgia is a (non-registered) Georgian political party founded by former Defense Minister Irakli Okruashvili on 27 September 2007. It is opposed to the current President Mikheil Saakashvili's alleged trend towards authoritarianism. Okruashvili was arrested on September 28, 2007, which led to anti-government demonstrations. The party was officially inaugurated on December 15, 2007, and Gia Tortladze, member of the Parliament of Georgia as its chairman, while Irakli Okruashvili, who is currently in custody in Germany, was elected an "honorary chairman". Irakli Okruashvili
Irakli Okruashvili ( ka, ირაკლი ოქრუაშვილი) (born 6 November 1973) is a Georgian politician who had served on various important posts in the Government of Georgia under President Mikheil Saakashvili, including being the Minister of Defense from December 2004 until being dismissed in November 2006. In September 2007, Okruashvili staged a scandalous comeback to Georgian politics, openly confronting Mikheil Saakashvili and creating the opposition party Movement for United Georgia. On September 27, 2007, Okruashvili was briefly arrested at his party headquarters on the charges of corruption, money laundering, and abuse of office. 2007 Georgian Demonstrations
In 2007, a series of anti-government protests took place across Georgia. The demonstrations peaked on 2 November 2007, when 40,000–50,000 rallied in downtown Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. People protested against the allegedly corrupt government of president Mikheil Saakashvili. Protests triggered by detention of Georgian politician Irakli Okruashvili on charges of extortion, money laundering, and abuse of office during his tenure as defense minister of the country were organized by the National Council, an ad hoc coalition of ten opposition parties, and financed by the media tycoon Badri Patarkatsishvili. 2008 Georgian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Georgia on 5 January 2008, moved forward from autumn 2008 by President Mikheil Saakashvili after the 2007 demonstrations. A referendum on when to hold the legislative elections was held at the same date. On 26 November 2007 the President's office announced that Georgia would hold another simultaneous referendum on NATO membership. Saakashvili was declared a winner with 53.7% of the votes despite the accusation of electoral fraud by the Georgian opposition.
