Mosonmagyaróvár ( hu, Mosonmagyaróvári járás) is a district in northern part of Győr-Moson-Sopron County. Mosonmagyaróvár is also the name of the town where the district seat is found. The district is located in the Western Transdanubia Statistical Region. Geography Mosonmagyaróvár District borders with the Slovakian regions of Bratislava and Trnava to the northeast, Győr District and Csorna District to the south, Kapuvár District and Austrian state of Burgenland to the west. Districts of Hungary are the second-level divisions of Hungary after counties. They replaced the 175 subregions of Hungary in 2013. Altogether, there are 174 districts in the 19 counties, and there are 23 districts in Budapest. Districts of the 19 counties are numbered by Arabic numerals and named after the district seat, while districts of Budapest are numbered by Roman numerals and named after the historical towns and neighbourhoods. Levél
Levél (german: Kaltenstein) is a village in Győr-Moson-Sopron county, Hungary. Geography Levél is in the north-west of Hungary, close to the M1 motorway between Mosonmagyaróvár and Hegyeshalom. It is on the international bicycle road to Hegyeshalom and Rajka. History The village was first mentioned as ''Kalthostan'' in a German text of 1410. The Hungarian name first appears in a tax registration in 1532. The Turkish local governor depopulated the village in 1529. In 1570 Maximilian II deported the Württemberg Saxons to the area. The French occupation of 1809 resulted in economic hardship for the population. The village gained access to electricity in 1926. In the Second World War the village's agricultural produce and livestock was requisitioned by the Wehrmacht, leading to food shortages. Most of German population was deported after the war. Lébény
Lébény ( la, Quadrata or ) is a town in Győr-Moson-Sopron County, midway between Mosonmagyaróvár and Győr, Hungary. It has a Romanesque monastic church commenced in 1208. Similar family or clan-financed medieval Hungarian monastic churches can be found in Ják, Ócsa, Nyírbátor, Harina and Mălâncrav. Early history The Lébény area has been occupied continuously since prehistoric times. Signs of human occupation have been found from the Neolithic, through the Bronze and Iron Ages, including excavated remains of Celtic habitation. When Tiberius, later the Roman Emperor, overran Transdanubia in AD 9, he established a military camp and civilian settlement in the area of present-day Lébény. Hédervár is a village in Győr-Moson-Sopron county, Hungary. Description The village settled in the Szigetköz in Győr-Moson-Sopron country halfway along the road connecting Győr and Mosonmagyaróvár. Its emergence can be associated with the German Héder – the founder of the Héderváry family – moving to Hungary. It was first mentioned in a charter in 1210. In spite of the relatively late written mention it is certain that it had been a village centuries before. It may have been the only village in the Szigetköz, which has survived at its original location in the Arpadian age. The Héderváry family established a family centre on the so-called “Jewish hill” as early as in the 13th century. Hegyeshalom
Hegyeshalom (; german: Straß-Sommerein) is a village of approximately 3600 inhabitants in Győr-Moson-Sopron County, Hungary, on the border with Austria and less than 15 km from the border with Slovakia. History A charter given by Andrew II of Hungary in 1217 mentions the settlement as Hegelshalm. After the Ottoman wars, the town was settled by German Jewish settlers. They were exterminated during the latter part of WW2. The name of Hegyeshalom is from the two Hungarian words = hegyes + halom. The word "hegyes" means "mountainous" (or "piked") and the word "halom" means "pile" (or "hill").
